6426 Panil Barriquée (Mild) Italy Belgian Strong Ale 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bottle, RBESG 2005 Grand Tasting. Cloudy brown colour. Strong brandy-like aroma, oaky and alcoholic like hell. Extremely oaky flavour, not too sweet. Apparently the sour version (infected with lactobacillus bacteria, available only in North America) tastes quite different, even though it is based on the same recipe.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bottle, RBESG 2005 Grand Tasting. Cloudy brownish yellow colour. Typical hefe aroma of bananas and cloves, cloves are dominant. Typical hefe flavour, maybe a tad sweeter than many other hefes. Nice enough.

Draught at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen. Cloudy pale yellowish colour, thick creamy head. Typical witbier aroma and flavour, coriander and orange peel, yeasty, a bit funky too. Light bodied, refreshing. Very moderate and bland aftertaste.

6429 Celis White Belgium Witbier 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Belgian brewed Celis White, allegedly also known under its alias "Ertvelds Wit". Draught at Den Tatoverede Enke, Copenhagen. Typical wit appearance. LOVELY aroma of burnt caramel / treacle and spices. Flavour is not nearly that exciting, this is a fairly watery and bland wit.

6430 Cherish Kriek (Bios Kriek) Belgium Fruit Lambic 2.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

Draught at Den Tatoverede Enke, Copenhagen, under its European alias "Bios Kriekenbier". Clear deep red colour, pinkish head. Aroma is overwhelming sour and sweet cherries. Flavour is one-dimensional of not very good sour cherries, generally sour & sweet with a tart finish. Sour aftertaste that lasts "forever", paralysed my tastebuds for a long time.

6431 Keizersberg Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bottle, at Den Tatoverede Enke, Copenhagen. Pale golden colour, slightly hazy. Moderate fruity sweet aroma. Fizzy mouthfeel. Fairly decent flavour (some oak, spices and a little brown sugar), a noticeable alcoholic warmth but not unpleasant.

6432 dEcaussinnes Ultra de Noel Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bottle, at Plan B, Copenhagen. Deep brown colour. Fine spicy and oaky aroma, vinous notes. Flavour is spicy and VERY sweet. Would go well with Christmas cakes, I guess.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

330 ml bottle, at Højer Sluse. Amber colour, good head. Moderate malty aroma. Sourish malty flavour with a dusty / metallic hops finish. Not a great beer this one.

6434 Meantime London IPA United Kingdom IPA 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Bottle, RBESG 2005 Grand Tasting. Deep golden colour. Pleasant hoppy aroma (my wild guess would have been Cascade and Chinook, but apparently it’s just "pound upon pound of Fuggles & Goldings", so what do I know - it smells good anyway). Refreshing hoppy flavour, reasonably well balanced. Not the most bitter IPA around, but bitter enough for me. Nice.

750 ml "champagne" bottle, RBESG 2005, Grand Tasting. Dark brown colour. Aroma of roast malts, oak and spices. Surprisingly moderate roasty flavour. Not bad, but I expected more.

6436 Vichtenaar Belgium Wild Ale 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Bottle, at Carlsen’s Kvarter, Odense, august 2005. Sell-by date was 23.12. 2003! Typical Flemish sour ale. Very dark reddish brown colour. Red wine / balsamico vinegar aroma and flavour, some sweetness remains. Oaky elements.

6437 Harviestoun Ptarmigan United Kingdom Bitter 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Cask conditioned at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen. Golden / amber colour, low head. Moderate malty aroma with fruity hops. A moderate but nice and crisp hoppiness in the flavour, well balanced with the malts. Easy drinking. A nice little beer this one!

6438 Gouden Carolus Noel Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.9

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

750 ml bottle, corked "champagne" style. ABV is 10.5%. Deep chestnut colour, large light tan head, nice lacing. Malty sweet and spicy aroma - aniseed, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, cloves(?) Notes of oak and leather too. Flavour is also dominantly malty sweet (too sweet) with caramel and spices, a certain hoppy bite too. Alcohol is evident, but not overwhelming. A fairly complex beer, but too much malty sweetness keeps me from giving it a top rating.

6439 Greene King The Beer To Dine For United Kingdom Blonde Ale 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

750 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. I had to try this one, despite being sceptical to the gimmicky name: IMO, most good beers are worth "to dine for" (with a possible exception of the very sweetest ones), so why should this one be different? It isn’t - it’s basically a decent standard golden ale, where the Tettnang hops (more commonly found in German lagers) shine through nicely. Citrussy aroma, notes of flowers and honey. Pleasant lightbodied flavour with a moderate but decent hoppiness throughout, nice but nothing spectacular. No doubt good with food (I must admit that my "dining" was limited to a couple slices of pizza), but again: so are many other beers.

6440 Grain dOrge France Belgian Ale 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

750 ml bottle, corked "champagne" style, labeled Grain d’Orge Tradition, bought in Denmark. I presume this is the same beer - ABV is the same. Clear golden to amber colour, large to moderate head. Aroma is yeasty and fruity (raisins, cider apples), hints of leather and oak. Mouthfeel is a bit fizzy, flavour is spicy and reasonably hoppy with a noticeable alcoholic bite.

6441 Paulaner Hefeweizen Dunkel Germany Dunkel Weizen 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle, bought in Germany. Pours cloudy brown with an enormous offwhite head. Intense banana aroma with notes of caramel, toffee, chocolate and cloves. Refreshing hefe-weissbier flavour, with some extra notes of malts and dark bread, but light-bodied - if blindfolded, I might mistake the flavour for a pale hefe. I wouldn’t mind having this beer as one of my "regulars".

6442 Slottskällans Imperial Stout Sweden Imperial Stout 4.5

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

330 ml bottle, ABV is 9.0%. Very dark reddish brown colour, nearly black. Excellent large and thick brown head. Lovely roasty aroma with strong notes of dark chocolate. Flavour is very roasty with strong notes of coffee, also some chocolate but not very sweet. Bitter finish, it’s hard to tell how much of the bitterness comes from the roastiness and how much from the hops - obviously both elements are plentiful. A first class imperial stout!

6443 Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel Germany Doppelbock 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle, bought in Germany. ABV is 7.1%, not 7.0% like the brewery website says. Deep chestnut colour, large and creamy light tan head. Very nice roasty aroma with notes of rye bread, caramel, hints of liquorice and chocolate. Fairly dry roasty flavour (roast malts), notes of coffee, toast and rye bread. Dry and hoppy bitter finish. An excellent doppelbock, not as smooth and sweet as some others of this style.

6444 Urthel Novicius Vertus Belgium Belgian Ale 2.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

Bottle, at Den Tatoverede Enke, Copenhagen. Sweet wort aroma, verging on "sickly". Malty sweet flavour too, not much to make me happy here. A cute label and decorated original glass did not help.

6445 La Binchoise Blonde Tradition Belgium Belgian Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

330 ml bottle. Pale straw coloured, slightly hazy, very large head. Interesting and complex yeasty, flowery and spicy aroma, some citrus and oak too. Flavour is zesty and spritzy with spices and decent hops, not too sweet. A very enjoyable Belgian blonde!

6446 Küppers Kölsch Germany Kölsch 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, bought in Germany. Pours crystal clear pale golden with a large head, leaves a nice lacing. Moderate aroma of aromatic hops with grassy and citrussy notes. Flavour of pale malts (including wheat) with citrussy notes, also a faint hint of smoke. Tolerable hops in the finish.

6447 Niksicko Pivo Montenegro Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle. ABV is 5%. My first beer from Montenegro. Clear pale golden colour, large and lasting white head, good lacing. Flowery and grassy aroma, quite nice. Maybe some soap in the background, but not enough to ruin the aroma. Light bodied with a substantial hoppy bitterness from start to finish. I would like some more malts to balance the hops, but this beer is still much better than I feared.

6448 Bucegi 4.2% Romania Pale Lager 1.7

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 4

I’ve noticed many raters frequently use the term ’bland’ for a lot of beers, appropriate or not. Now listen guys: You don’t fully realize what a ’bland’ beer is before you have sampled Bucegi! A remnant of the communist era, Bucegi was withdrawn from the market in 1995, but re-launched in February 2002, to nourish some Romanians’ nostalgic sentiments of the good old bad old times.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bottle, RBESG 2005 Grand Tasting. Hazy golden colour. Nice pilsener / helles aroma (Hallertau hops?), flowers, grass, honey. Flavour is like a "raw" pilsener, spritzy, tolerable hops but not really that exciting.

Bottle, at Den Tatoverede Enke, Copenhagen. Strong fruity aroma with notes of oak, farmhouse, caramel and spices. Sourish flavour, some oak and spices. Not the best gueuze I’ve had.
