76 Allagash Little Brett United States Belgian Ale 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

(to be fair this bottle was born a year ago)OK, first off I had to pick a style (on that other beer site it would be called an American Brett, here Belgian seems the closest fit.) Pineapple and grass in the nose. Pours a thin head over a very pale straw body with no lace. Mouth is thin but not watery, perhaps a bit under-carbonated. I have become fond of this flavor profile. Pineapple and grass, maybe a bit of tobacco, just slightly sour with a fairly clean finish. Its more than the sum of its parts.

How do you tell a Saison from a Belgian Pale? I surely don't know. Initial nose is flowers/spring meadow. After a moment some lemon and clove. A very pale yellow and continually effervescent body is topped by a huge rocky white head that lasts and lasts and leaves wonderful lace. Mouth is on the light side of medium bodied, nice and tingly and a bit slippery. Really tastes like Saison duPont to me but turned down just a notch. There is lemon, a hint of clove (but NOT cloying) some yeasty flavor in towards the end taste and the finish is quite hoppy but only moderately bitter, the hops are peppery in the end. There is a bit a grass right at the end but the palette is left quite clean. Yup, I love this brew!

78 Leffe Blonde Belgium Belgian Ale 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Pours a great big head with oversized bubbles clinging to the outside of the glass and a lovely soft merengue textured mass floating atop the head. A soft copper colored body slightly fogged with a steady procession of carbonation makes up the body. Amazing Lace! I had to let the head receed a bit to get the aroma of the beer (my fault for pouring it into a tall galss instead of a chalice)which is just coming through now. Vanilla, orange peel, black pepper, yeast, clove, cinnamon, and a hard subtle hard to identify low note, figs perhaps. Mouthfeel starts clean, tingly, and crisp but leaves a sinuous soft coating, absolutely delightful. The flavor starts out upfront and then suprises with a continued complexity. It hits the palette with sweet yeast and round ripe tropical fruit full of esthers... mango and grapefruit and bombards with a peppery zing including clove and cinnamon at almost the same time which predominates in midtaste as it leads to an end note of tart citrus. Aftertaste is vaguely melon leading to grain and now a bit of sour yeast. These components are all incredibly well balanced and present themselves not as seperate stages but as an almost contemporaneous bursting of flavors. This is jsut a very intelligently crafted ale almost impossible to improve upon.

Buddy had a bottle in the fridge while we were racking to secondary; what the hell a Belgian Breakfast! Typical of Ommegang, this offering hits the style nicely. Pours a cloudy medium amber color on the reddish side with big frothy head and nice retention. Lots of malt souring fruit in the nose. Good full mouth slippery and good carbonation. Pretty complex flavor with solid malt backbone, initial sweetness and corriander, sour apples and fig, slightly bitter towards the end and a sour dry finish. Does not sit as heavy as some other Belgians which I find quite a pleasing trait. A very very well made beer.

80 Orval Belgium Belgian Ale 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Drinking a late 2019 in mid 2021, not sure how it had been treated. Not getting the fabulous nose oft mentioned. Smells like a mild heffe, some bubblegum, some barnyard funk. Huge, too huge really, white head makes for a challenging pour. Cloudy medium apricot-colored body under that huge head and leaves interesting lace. Mouth is slightly creamy and very full, very carbonated...over-carbonated? I would like to call this finish sour but sadly medicinal is more appropriate. Warming alcohol is a big part of the ending. Starts almost neutral then a rapid hit of bitter, then heads off into the pasture before that unpleasant ending but that goes away and leaves a fairly clean and just slightly sweet aftertaste. Definitely complex. Smooths out s it warms a bit or maybe I am just getting used to the aspirin finish.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Big old barnyard funk in the nose Belgium all the way Plus cloves plus cardamom they're calling this a Belgian IPA but it's really a Hefe. Slightly hazed amber body with fantastic lace and a good head and it leaves a great skim coat with retention. Mouth is creamy carbonation is good. I don't know how to score the flavor.... I'm in a tastes like I said someone or a heffe so what the hell is a Belgian style IPA supposed to taste like? If this was a hefe or SSO and I'd probably give it an 8 on flavor so what the hell I'll give it an 8.

82 Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Wild Ale United States Belgian Strong Ale 3.6

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 7

Nose of pine and lemon, some pepper, violets. Clear pale copper body is topped with gorgeous white head, this sticky lace, good retention. Mouth is medium to thickish, not very slick, perhaps a little too still. Flavor...this is indeed an odd duck. It has some major Belgium roots to it, a funk and sour thing going on. Perhaps some bubble gum. Lotta spice in there, pepper, cardamon, DRY! Maybe the driest beer I have ever had. Quite hoppy in terms of bitterness (not flavor),some citrus, a touch of nasty chemical in the end. I will have to revisit this as the Little Sumpin line is one of my favorites, this one is just odd.

83 Abbaye des Rocs Grand Cru Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Ripe dark fruit, and roasted malts in the nose and some cotton candy. A foggy brown body is topped with a moderate off white head with good retention and only a bit of lace. Mouth is medium and a bit creamy with perfect carbonation. Make no mistake, this beer is sweet! Deep ripe fig and prune notes are soon overtaken with cotton candy, amazing to think they add no sugar. 9.5 and is totally masked with only a hint of warming. Aftertaste starts sweet but ends dry and clean. Masterful Brewing!

84 North Coast Brother Thelonious United States Belgian Strong Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Interesting beer, reminds me of a dopplebock. Pours a ruby brown, lots of violet in the body.Decent light biege head that has medium endurance, good lacing. Not a lot of nose to this beer which is suprising. Wahts there is some yeast and some berry. Mouthfeel is full and the carbonation is nicely done. Strong flavor elements and fairly complex, befitting its Belgium target. A very winey flavor with lots of spice and fruit followed by a significant presence of alcohol, finishes sweet. Not a lot of hops profile in this brew. A very good american attempt at a Belgium Stong ale and they kick in 2 bucks a case towards a jazz foundation. (Thelonius Monk, Thelooniou Brothers, Monks made Belgium Ale, its kinda clever.) rerate 1/2/2016 Did the recipe change or did I? Tons of long-lasting nose on this thing; figs, cotton candy, grape, marking that up. Zero lace, marking that down. Carbonation seems a bit light.Pretty tasty though. But qutie sweet and alcoholmore maked that previous tasting.

85 Brooklyn Local 1 United States Belgian Strong Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

I have had a couple of the big bottles and the flavor seemed to vary somewhat. Pop the cork and it pours a hazey medium copper with a big head and nice retention with good lace. Complex nose with alcohol, spice and yeast all present. Mouth if full and smooth. The first time I tried this the taste was quite yeasty and reminded me of a good organic lager. Second time around ( and maybe the first time was me, not the bottle, it wasn't the first beer I had that evening) it presented a very complex profile; still plenty of yeast with lots of clove-like spiceyness and a lot of fruit... figs and earthyness. Finish is rich and not quite dry. In a blind test I might have thought this was a heffe. A very well done American version of a Belgain Strong. By the way, local 1 is the stage hands union in NYC, coincidence?

86 Duvel Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.4

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Bread and honey in the nose with just a hint of vanilla and lemmon. Amazing head! Pure white frothy, huge .....whipped eggwhites is comprised of VERY large bubbles, beautiful to gaze at with the best lace I have seen. This sits on a very transparent pale gold body. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a nice tingle. (It might be my imagination but I have had maybe a quarter of the bottle while writing this and I think I am already a bit buzzed.)Flavor is very clean, alcohol very well masked. Its a perfectly balanced flavor that is constantly complex throughout, not a lot of stages to the taste except perhaps a distinct aftertaste that goes deliciously sour and a nice bit of bitter. The alcohol shows up in the aftertaste more as a feeling then a taste. The taste......earthy with a bit of nut flavor, sour ripe fruit somewhere between grape and fig, a complcated yeast component and a nice malt flavor that gives a solid backbone that is ever so slightly sweet and plays beautifully witht the sour. This is just art in a glass; an intense complexity of brewing perfection hidden in what appears to be at first a very simple flavor. This is incredible beer-making! I am starting to think my ratings at the high end are low, this is probably a 4.7 beer as are several others that I have ranked in the low 4's (which are tops of my list.) One other comment, for a strong ale this is incredibly lager like in its character!

87 Ommegang Biere de Mars United States Biere de Garde 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Perhaps it was me but I did not detect much nose in this beer. A deep copper body was topped with a lovely tight off-white head with decent lacing. Mouth was medium to full bodied with good carbonation. Flavor was interesting. Starts with a hint of sour reminding one of a good Belgian Farmhouse, then it starts tasting more like a brown ale, and at the taste's end the is a surprisingly strong hit of piney hops. The finish is remarkably dry. This would not be amongst my favorites but it is a very well made and interesting brew and fairly unique in my experience. It offers a fairly complex flavor profile and yet is quite approachable with a lower abv than one would expect. Really a nice job!

Nose similar to Duvel, lots of funk some grass. Described as a pale gold but I would say a pale amber with rocky white head and medium lace. Medium mouth, creamy, and a bit lacking in carbonation. Sweet and sour flavor with not much complexity, decent session brew.

Wow, this is CRAP! Giving the nose a three since there is NO NOSE, figure I have to save a 2 for a really bad nose. Pours a pale yellow clear body topped by a small white head that vanishes instantly leaving no skim coat and almost no lace. Yes indeed they have "crafted" a MacroSwill! I really doubt this is an ale. The malts are pilsner and caramel pilsen. Mouth also non-existent, thin as hell and slightly fizzy. Flavor, well less than Bud or Corona; they made malt taste like corn and rice. A little sweet, a hint of grass at the end, it plays at being a pilsner, just can't imagine this is an ale. As an ale its the worst I have ever tasted (well except for a home brew batch that just went all wrong ... we called it tennis ball brown because it tasted and smelled like tennis balls.) Were it billed as a macroswill lager it would only be in the top 10 worst.

Minimal nose is sweet and a touch grassy. Light copper body topped by minimal head with little retention or lace. Mouth is medium, a bit creamy, quite nice with good carbonation level. Some honey in the taste, some decent malt backbone, hops are bitering, pretty decent balance, very sessionable. RERATE 7/11/2015 big pillow head with good retention and some lace. Floral nose easy drinking!

Nose similar to a Pilsner but with less grass and a bit more biscuit. Pours a pale yellow with minimal white head with little retention and little lace. Decent mouth not quite watery, quite tingly well-done carbonation. A bit spicier in the end than many blondes which is quite nice. Some apple or pear in the middle and a very clean finish. Light grass and biscuit at the start . Quite nicely done actually and very drinkable.

Grass and biscuit in the nose really a kind of a pilsner nose. Nice golden body minimal head no lace. Really nice level of carbonation in the mouth clean with a moderate body. I really like this blonde it's so easy drinking. Tastes like a good pills but with a little touch of sweetness at the end.

Pilsner nose lots of grass and a whiff of citrus. Light gold body with intense effervesce toped with rocky white head leaves decent lace. Medium bodied and tingly in the mouth, just a bit creamy. Not a fan of the flavor profile. Getting some overpowering medicinal taste in the middle and a bit of it in the aftertaste. There is some sour in there also not pleasurable, pouring this one out.

96 Samuel Smith Organic Ale United Kingdom Blonde Ale 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

This ale pours a soft copper color with a big and very short-lived, ivory colored, fuzzy head that disolves to a nice lace wiht excellent lace on the sides of the glass and the has the ability to raise a very slight head with each swig. The nose is soft and short-lived with prominent yeast and lemon and a slight deep fig-like note. Mouth feel is thin and clean with a bit of tingle on the back of the mouth. Some may find it under-carbonated but I thik the fiz is very nicely done, each swig brings a bit of effervescence up from the bottom to form a pale new lace. The flavor starts sweet and a bit bready ,then immeadiately goes to a floral hops followed by a nice hops bitterness and finshes very clean with a hint of lemon. I got just a touch of a chemically taste in the finish but after half a few swigs I no longer detect it, I think its a drinking temperature issue. This ale tastes much better very cool than cold! This is a quite nicely done, I was going to say English but I see its classified as blonde, ale. It would make a killer session beer but it would not be an inexpensive session. It definately tastes like more.

IF YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT A LITE DRINK THIS INSTEAD AND THEY SEND A BUCK TO THE BIG EASY! Nice light yeasty aroma with a bit of violets, goes away fast sniff it while you can. Poured a big frothy head with moderate retention and very nice long-lasting lace. Body is slightly copper colored for a blonde ale but not unappealing. Mouthfeel is slippery water and very little tingle. Taste is timid throughout but pretty well balanced. Hits hoppy with a touch of berry and a touch of chemical bitterness. Finish is tart and crisp. Has just a touch of chemical in the after-taste or I would have scored it higher. This is a very drinkable session ale.

98 Rogue Dead Guy Ale United States Bock 2.7

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

First thing I noticed was a real lack of aroma. Almost no nose at all. Ever so slight hint of fruit. After it warmed a bit there was an added scent of slightly sour bread. Small head that dissapears very rapidly with almost no lace. Moutfeel is clean. Falvor was, to me, suprisingly hopped at the outset..I was expecting a bit more bread in the palate, ends with a bitter hops flavor and a hint of skunk. All in all a dissapointment. I wonder if this bottle had not been properly cared for. Although it had similarities to the rogue chipolte but then again they came from the same store at the same time. Will be interesting to read other's reviews. At this point I am unlikely to purcahse another Rogue offering.

[ Additional note: This beer is, IMHO, quite underrated here. Its not a "huge" beer and it is "simple" but an excellent simple beer is a thing of beauty.} By the way, let this warm significantly to really discover its depth. Smells a bit like a pasture, some grassy scents, quite floral, a touch of hop spiciness, maybe some caramel notes, and malt.... this is a very nice nose. First one poured with NO HEAD at all, read above reviews so threw it out and opened another. This one pours a frothy very white and tight head which sits above a clear, medium gold body and leaves nice lace. Yeasty pools sprout up on the skim coat that is left. Mouth on this is medium bodied and very slippery which is nice. Coats the pallet well. A lot more hops bitterness than one would expect in a bock, this is almost a hybrid style. More complex than most of SN's offerings methinks. Lots of clean light fruit, apples and grapes with significant sweetness hit the mouth and then follows some lemon and pepper, with a tart slightly bitter finish. Aftertaste is quite dry considering how sweet it started out. Alcohol is warming and also plays as part of the taste especially in the finish. This is a very well done beer!

100 Samuel Adams Noble Pils United States Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 2.9

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

High quality lager nose, at first a lot of bread and yeast notes, with mellow malt following, and a touch of floral hops with a hint of grass. Nice clear golden body, minimal head and no lace. Mouth is a bit thin and a bit watery. Carbonation is a bit too fizzy. Flavor is primarily bitter, very unbalanced, no malt backbone to speak of, nasty chemical aftertaste. Sad imitation of a high quality pils. Far and away the worst Sam I have ever had. Feb 20 2011 rerate coming soon, have had this on tap and while not my favorite the above review is too harsh.
