76 New Belgium Ranger IPA United States IPA 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Grapefruit and violet in the nose pours a medium orange that is clear with a nice white head that leaves decent lace. I really like them out on this it's quite full-bodied for an IPA a little bit creamy. Taste is very well-balanced some orange nice bitterness at the Finish with just a hint of honey in the mix. Extremely drinkable and very well done

77 Omnipollo Machaper Sweden American Pale Ale 4.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Ok, first of all I put this brewer in as Sweden because its Swedish dudes doing a "gypsy" thing and having beer brewed all over the place, in this case in Denver by Crazy Mountain brewing Company Limited. Very long lasting nose of grassy and lemon and honey with a hint of resin and some deep funk. Appears unflitered, lots of gunk on the bottom of the bomber ...hazy pale yellow body with a decent short lived head that is white white white, and minimal lace. Mouth is medium, slick, and moderately carbonated. Very unusual flavor profile. Classified as a Pale Ale because thats what the label alls it. Its certainly NOT an English style ale. Actually tastes like a slightly sour American IPA.The galaxy shines here, citric and tropical notes abound, lemon and passionfruit, hints of pineapple. Low malt presence for a Pale Ale (and maybe even for an IPA) finishes with sour grassy notes and slight alcohol warming. What comes to mind is a Session IPA IF a Session IPA every tasted good! this thing is could really be slammed. Odd duck but I really love it! (very hard to find out east here.)

78 Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro United States Milk Stout 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Very pleasant nose, raisins, vanilla, chocolate, espresso, milk shake, and pine. Very dark brown with tiny hint of ruby and opaque body topped with a dark tan head that has very good retention and minimal lace. The nitro aspect is minimal in the pour which is OK by me. Very creamy in the mouth, moderately bodied. A fairly mild flavor profile is none the less well balanced. Some delicate chocolate notes, a malted milk malt flavor, some high notes of lactic acid, sweet at the finish but clean with little aftertaste. Alcohol very masked. Easy drinking!

79 Dogfish Head Immort Ale United States American Barleywine 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nose is lemmon, pepper, lavender, and fresh backed bread ... complicated and balanced, real nice. Pours a thick forthy beige head with moderate endurance and real good lacing. A deep copper body lurks beneath with continuing effervesance moving up to restore the lace. For some reason, personal I guess, I find hte color slightly off-putting. Mouthfeel is VERY slippery, creamy and tingly ... again VERY nice. Taste is spot on for type, winey, layered, complicated, and balanced. It hits very sweet, I suspect crystal malts and toasted malts, a bit of caramel flavors in that initial taste. It follows with a nice floral hoppy bite, an astringency, and a significant presence of alcohol in the midtatste. That is followed with a lavender and citrus flavor and stronger caramel flavors. End taste is sugar, almost like icing but with a hint of tartness. Aftertaste is suprisingly clean for this ale and i get an intersting pear flavor. I find this to be a very good ale but if sweetness bothers you then this one's not for you. I would liek to try this with a real good stinky cheese course, I suspect it would be fantastic!

80 Duchy Originals Organic Ale United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Aroma is a nice mix of malts and hops...pine, lemon peel, rosemary, and apples with a nice bready overtone. The aroma lasts! This is an aromatic brew. Appearance is in the eye of the beholder I guess but this one looks lovely to me. Pours a medium deep copper-colored body that is slightly foggy and is just a bit more red than most copper-colored ales ...bronze I guess. Caps with a very foamy head that is nicely done and lasts a moderate amount of time. No constantly rising bubbles but a nice thin foam remains on the top and excellent lacing. Mouth is real nice, very soft and velvety, smooth and suprisingly a nice hint of thickness with a decent tingle. Like the nose promised there is a good amount of hops in this beer. It hits a bit nutty-malty,yeasty, a little rosemary astingency in the taste --- not a strong flavor but nicely done. Leads to a nice yet not terribly complex sweet sour thing and ends tart and dry. Reminisent of an IPA with less hops bitterness, this is a very drinkable ale. Alcohol is fully masked. I drank a LOT of English bitters in the pubs in 73 when I was 19, This is the first I have had since. For a beer that in most ways is modest I am suprised how high my rating is going to come out. This is just very well done!

81 Lagunitas India Pale Ale United States IPA 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

I had been away from hoppy beers for a while and thought I would pick this six up. Nose of pine, lemmon, pepper....what a good IPA nose is all about. Pours very frothy with a ibgt loose head that soon reduces to a skim coat floating on top of a light copper-colored clear body with a few tight bubbles constantly rising to the top; replenishing the skim coat. Very nice lacing all the way down the glass.Motuhfeel is nicely foamy, slightly slippery and clean. Better balance then I expected after reading hte label "homicidally hoppy". Not to say the hops aren't there, they are and in a big way, but they do a lovely dance with a quality malty sweet body. The taste of this beer is not so much about stages of flavor as it is about a constant really well balanced blend of flavors. That said it does hit hoppsy floral, goes sweet, and finishes VERY astringent. The more I tatste the more I like this beer, its just excellent balance for a very hoppy brew. There is an interesting fruity note well hidden in there, prunes perhaps and I am starting to think the malts are toasted, almost a carmel sweetness floating around with great bitter hops. Perhaps my favorite IPA, alwasy a tuff decision.

82 Samuel Adams Honey Porter United States Porter 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nose is sweet, carmelized malts with an interesting balance of hops floral and piney. Pours a very dark copper, almost black. Nice big frothy dirty beige head with decent staying power. Really nice lace! Wow this is interesting, very silky and full mouthfeel. Hits tart and then the sweet, carmelized malt comes on but stays fairly hoppy throughout. Unusual hop presence for a porter. Flavor lingers and changes for a fairly complicated taste. Goes a bit sour towards the end, fruity sour...figs and tart citrus. Finishes dry and fairly clean. None of the tastes are "big" but they are all there and well balanced. AFter all the fun tasting the finish somehow sesms just a bit watery. Another interesting showing for Sam.

83 Brooklyn Local 1 United States Belgian Strong Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

I have had a couple of the big bottles and the flavor seemed to vary somewhat. Pop the cork and it pours a hazey medium copper with a big head and nice retention with good lace. Complex nose with alcohol, spice and yeast all present. Mouth if full and smooth. The first time I tried this the taste was quite yeasty and reminded me of a good organic lager. Second time around ( and maybe the first time was me, not the bottle, it wasn't the first beer I had that evening) it presented a very complex profile; still plenty of yeast with lots of clove-like spiceyness and a lot of fruit... figs and earthyness. Finish is rich and not quite dry. In a blind test I might have thought this was a heffe. A very well done American version of a Belgain Strong. By the way, local 1 is the stage hands union in NYC, coincidence?

Ok, reviewing from memory after an afternoon on the Hudson starting with Brown Sugga, followed by Hampton Double White, and ending with DogFishHead 120 minute, amazing I can still type! Beautiful beer! Nice carmel head with dark brown body and good lace. Toasted malts and carmel in the nose, nicely done. Full thick mouthfeel. Lots of toasted carmel malt backbone in the taste with suprsing amount of hops bitternes, really well balanced, alcohol really well masked, great beer!

85 Gearys Pale Ale United States English Pale Ale 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

I always pick up a six or two when I visit the in-laws in Maine, this is the first time I took some home to review. Ton of malt and yeast in the nose when first poured, when that blows off it reveals a nose of floral hops, some citrus, some spice, a sweet very nice nose. A bit of a surprise with the light brown body, very clear and nice carbonation bubbling up the glass. I moderate slightly creamy off-white head that is fairly short lived but leaves a nice thick skim coat. Very nice lacing. A very full, for a pale ale, mouthfeel that is silky and creamy, really nicely done! There is a lot of sweetish malt in the taste but its very well balanced with an astringent hoppiness. There is also a fruity presence in the middle of the taste and the alcohol is also present, leaving a nice warming feeling. This may be the best pale I have encountered. This one is walking the line between an American Pale and an English ESB. Back when I was a kid, in 73, I spent a month in London. Ate exclusively at the pubs and drank a whole lot of "bitter". Didn't know what that really meant then, this was long before American craft brewing caught fire. It was exclusively on draught and I have no idea what brewers it was coming from, I have always wished I could taste it again now. I think this beer comes close, perhaps a bit maltier. It also took me a while to get into the swing of the beer being served less than cold. I'm gonna let the last of this Geary's warm a bit for a final tasting. Hmmm, it likes to be a bit on the warm side, the flavor really blossoms and gets more complex. The imported English yeast and malts (I am tasting a hint of the chocolate malt now)is shining through and, in my opinion, putting most American pales to shame! Great brew and great session brew!

86 Schneider Weisse Tap 5: Schneider-Brooklyner Hopfen Weisse Germany Strong Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

I really like this beer! Soft, floral nose also has lots of fruit in it; figs and cherries. There is also malt in the nose with some carmel notes. Huge merangue head thick and frothy that lasts. the lace is large, not fine, but nice. Cloudy pale golden-amber body. Mouthfeel is full with lots of satin slipping around, not chewy but quite enjoyable. The flavor is unique; half hefe and half imperial IPA---its an interesting battle and the brewers have pulled it off nicely! Flavor is very complicated. Lots of fruit, black cherry and orange. A bit of piney flavor as the aroma hits the tongue that quickly dissolves into a decent malt backbone. There is a bit of honey in the initial taste as well. The whole thing is nicely heated with the small presence of alcohol (mot of it nicely masked.)The finish is VERY clean but leaves a sour aftertaste.

87 Southampton Abbot 12 United States Abbey Quadrupel 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Reviewed as night cap to a VERY long 4th of July so take with a grain of salt. This is a fantastic nose, winey and spicy, with serious carmel and malt scents and very nice hoppy spicyness; a very big nose with retention. Pours a serious greyish head that does not linger which sits over a foggy copper body. Mouthfeel is rich, heavy and full with nice carbonation. Flavor is sweet and surprisingly uncomplicated; lots of brown sugar/carmel flavor with some ripe fruit, perhaps fig, and a small hint of hops bitterness. Alcohol is totally masked. Somehow they have pulled off a very clean and dry finish which is a bit of a shock. Overall is hard to grade; this beer is not complex in the sense of developing various flavors but it excellently balanced throughout and the finish is just amazing; a major brew!

88 Sierra Nevada Harvest Fresh Hop IPA - Southern Hemisphere Harvest® United States IPA 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Man this is for the hop heads! Great big hops nose that eventually rounds out a wee bit, lots of pine and some spice. Good beige head atp a lovely deep amber body with nice lace and retention. WONDERFUL in the mouth, big full wet slippery carbonation nicely done. I am not quite a hop head but this flavor is wonderful, huge hops without tasting "green", screams of freshness, lots of grapefruit, lots of pine and pepper, decently balanced, alcohol masked, somehow doesn't finish as bitter as it tastes, nicely done.

89 Ommegang Rare Vos United States Belgian Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Buddy had a bottle in the fridge while we were racking to secondary; what the hell a Belgian Breakfast! Typical of Ommegang, this offering hits the style nicely. Pours a cloudy medium amber color on the reddish side with big frothy head and nice retention. Lots of malt souring fruit in the nose. Good full mouth slippery and good carbonation. Pretty complex flavor with solid malt backbone, initial sweetness and corriander, sour apples and fig, slightly bitter towards the end and a sour dry finish. Does not sit as heavy as some other Belgians which I find quite a pleasing trait. A very very well made beer.

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

ReRate: 2/9/15 Was I drunk? (or has it changed) The body is now a very pale amber, the lacing is excellent. Taste is not so entirely grapefruit and this is sweeter than I remembered. The alcohol is warming. I can get in trouble with this beer, for me its sessionable at 8% and 102 IBU. Surprisingly not super-bitter, a tasty beer. Big-time grapefruit in the nose, nice dark amber body with moderate head that is off0white and low lacing. Good medium bodied mouth feel very nice carbonation level on the tongue. Flavor as nose promised, grapefruit dominates but somehow its well Alcohol totally masked. rounded, very nicely balanced. I don't know what the IBU is on this one but grapefruit is interesting, I can't really drink grapefruit juice up here in CT, its always too bitter for me, but in Florida fresh squeezed from a good grove I don't find I love it. Sort of the same with this beer, no doubt huge hops but its flavor hops not huge in bittering hops, or so it seems to me.

91 Smuttynose Finestkind IPA United States IPA 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nose predominately hops, lots of pine and citrus, a thin wiff of vanilla and malt. Smallish white head sits leaves mediocre lace and sits atop a hazy medium amber/light copper body. Mouth feel is medium bodied carbonation a bit flat. Flavor, well this is a beer for the hop heads, nothing delicate of balanced here, its straight ahead hops...a big mouthful of bitter, hint of deep over-ripe fig or raisin, very bitter finish, all appropriate to an American IPA. Well done for what it is. Rerate:2022 head lasts with a nice skim coat and leaves lovely lace. Carbonation is spot on.

92 Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA United States IPA 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Well its pretty darn good! I've got a lot of sawdust up my nose just now but the pine and citrus nose is coming through anyway with a nice aroma of yeasty malt as well. Head is gorgeous; off white and very thick and eggwhite like in texture. This all sits over a (surprisingly foggy) medium copper body. (I can't decide if I should down grade for the fog, I suppose I should but I like a slightly fogged beer, even if it is filtered and I am not sure if this is unfiltered or chill haze.) Excellent lacing! The mouth is thick and chewy and very creamy, a great trick considering the ABV. Taste is good. Lots of hops but not super bitter (I guess maybe the torpedo device works!) A very solid slightly caramel malt backbone on this one, a bit of a surprise for an American IPA, a fair amount of biscuit, nice nuttiness, a hint of ripe tropical fruit, a fair amount of citrus and lots of pine, a dry slightly bitter finish, alcohol just a bit present and warming. Very well done, and the lace remains spectacular! ADDITIONAL NOTE: Having found one from the same 6 as a year ago I recommend drinking these fresh. The nose remains but the finish is much more bitter than the 70-80 IBU would hint at. Then again, maybe you'll like it that way. (no re-rate)11/14 getting this regularly on tap now. Even smoother and creamier.

93 Ayinger Celebrator Dopplebock Germany Doppelbock 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Sweet nose of raisins and figs and molasses with a good bit of anise as it warms. As it warms there is some chocolate/coffee tones. Small dirty brown head that subsides leaving a skim coat sits atop a very dark brown body with a hint of ruby. Mouth is full and a bit chewy with a very nice fizz. The flavor is complex with malt and hops masterfully balanced. Taste starts dry goes a bit sweet and bitter at the same time in mid taste, finishes tart/sour and aftertaste is very dry. There are tastes of raisin, chocolate, coffee ... lots of toasty malt notes with a perfectly balanced hop bitterness. The alcohol is a bit present at the end with a nice warming. This is very similar to Aventinus and its hard to say which I prefer, will have to do a side by side tasting! Wonderful Brew, absolutely World Class!

94 Bells Two Hearted Ale United States IPA 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

A clear deep amber body is topped by a significant white head of tight foam that lasts and laces nicely. Nose is complex with some lavender and floral notes and a fair amount of biscuit and perhaps a bit of orange peel. Mouth is a bit watery yet also creamy. Wouldn't mind a bit more fiz. Flavor is also complex. A very solid malt backbone for the style, closer to an English Pale in that regard. Nice bready flavors a bit of grapefruit, some nuts and perhaps a hint of chocolate with a bone dry and bitter finish. This is masterfully balanced for a beer that advertises hopheadedness.

Flavor is for you hopheads, tons of grapefruit, a hint of malt, sweet and sour delight that finishes dry. Alcohol well masked. Finish is very dry and clean.

Reviewed with the disadvantage of being at the wife's HS reunion, at a bar, without a glass. Good nose,, grapefruit and malt, appearance well... it was in a bottle what can I say! (I'll guess an 8). Mouth was medium, well carbonated, and a bit chewy. Flavor, big ole grapefruit but with a very solid malt backbone (see aracauna's reveiew) a very solid IPA flavor, alcohol strong but very well masked. Really good effort here from a small brewery I never heard of before.

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Wow, there whole thing is everything in a can, and its not bad, no not bad at all. Aroma of Lemmon, a hint of Banana and a hint of tobacco. Medium copper body with a very nice full head that lasts and produces great lace. Good mouth, medium to slightly light, slippery and nice carbonation level. Flavor... a winner hops more present as bittering than as flavoring. Tastes really fresh, tastes the most like a home brewed beer of any commercial beer I have had. A lot of fresh green in the flavor ; must come from the double dry-hopping. This one tastes more bitter than the 69 IBU would lead you to suspect. Some grapefruit in the aftertaste, really solid malt backbone on this, almost too much for the style. Perhaps a hint of buttery like a good English Pale. I really really like this one! The 6.9% ABV is wickedly well masked.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Nose is pine, citrus, and perhaps a bit of anice, some flowers, some nice bready malts. This is really a pretty pour! Medium gold body that is NOT clear (OK wrong for the style but really pretty none the less) is topped by a thick, creamy dead white head which leaves lovely lacing. If this was not a style that should be clear I would give it a 10 here but, although it pains me, am marking it down to an 8 on appearance. Wow, this is a very well-crafted IPA; nothing over the top but not a watered down presentation either, more or les spot on except perhaps a bit, just a bit, sweet. Although in a can, very reminiscent of DFH 60 on draught. I am following a very spicy mexican-thai inspired shrimp stir fry and this is absolutely delightful! OK, mouth is medium to full, creamy, slippery very nice on the carbonation. Flavor hits sweet malts, goes a bit floral and then citrus, nice bitter finish that is neither dry nor sweet. Some apricot and some nuttiness and some sour grapefruit. This is getting low numbers here, I think its killer!

99 Slumbrew Sittin' on Hop of the World White IPA United States American Wheat 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Had to choose a category for this ale, it really is a hybrid. Long-lasting nose of peaches, grass, vanilla, and a hint of pepper. Very nice in the glass, a light copper body topped with a medium but long-lasting head with moderate lace and tiny bubbles that continue to rise long after the pour. Mouth is full-bodied, slick, slightly creamy, with lovely carbonation. With talk of peach puree I was (needlessly as it turns out) worried about the flavor. Its a fairly straightforward flavor with some peach adding a nice sweetness, the hops combined with the wheat malts provide more tartness than bitterness. This brew has tang and a dry finish with just a slight herbal aftertaste (possibly a hint of peach pit in the aftertaste). The alcohol is well masked. Hybrids can be scary, this is a very successful hybrid.

This beer has changed recipe? This is now an Imperial IPA (they call it double) at 8.1 ABV and a whopping 95 IBU. Nose is peaches, pine, and floral. Orange-amber body that is not clear topped with minimal white head that leaves a solid skim coat and little lace. Mouth if full, creamy, and carbonation spot on. Good balance on the flavor. Big grain and big bitter with a slightly dry finish and alcohol present. Hints of peach, tobacco, and something green...., pine resin and bitter, did I say bitter? Its bitter!
