76 Marston's Pedigree United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Reviewing from 2 day old memory and no adequate glass. Nice malty nose with a touch of pine and some sweet non-toasted malty notes. Bad glass (plastic cup, don't ask) so no appearance review. Medium to light mouth with good carbonation. Lots of good malt flavor something a bit odd in the hopping. Tastes a bit too much like a brown ale.

77 Boddingtons Pub Ale United Kingdom Bitter 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Nose similar to Duvel, lots of funk some grass. Described as a pale gold but I would say a pale amber with rocky white head and medium lace. Medium mouth, creamy, and a bit lacking in carbonation. Sweet and sour flavor with not much complexity, decent session brew.

78 Innis & Gunn Rum Cask Oak Aged Beer United Kingdom English Strong Ale 2.6

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 5

Nose is predominately whisky with some bread, some coffe notes as it warms. Me no like. Pours a decent whitish head that is quite short lasting. Body is a dark clear copper, almost no lace. Mouth is watery. Flavor is predominately sweet. Maple syrup notes with a fair bit of malt and a sweet whiskey finish. How do you rate flavor on this odd-ball whisky/oak strong ale? I think you say that this is NOT what a strong ale should taste like, add 1 pt since its odd and give it a 6. Will not drink this again. And its over-priced.

79 Samuel Smith Organic Chocolate Stout United Kingdom Chocolate Stout 2.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 4

Oh My, the nose just screams chocolate, some ripe fruit (their yeast) sends this to Kalua or Brandy Alexander, maybe some cinnamon, not a nose for the faint of heart. Nose is long -lasting. Pours opaque very dark brown body with minimal head (point off for this) that is beige and leaves a bit of short-lived lace. Mouth is thin (I seem to be hitting a lot of thin-mouthed stouts lately) and perhaps a touch under-carbonated. (Interesting that Samuel calls this a malt beverage with natural flavor added, one wonders where in the brewing process this happens, does chocolate go in just before bottling?) I am going to let this warm in the glass for 10-15 minutes before grading the flavor, cold its chocolate and perhaps raspberry with decent bittering. OK... very poor balance, chocolate is overwhelming and tastes like an extract, not like quality chocolate. Some bittering and some citrus-like notes buried in the crappy chocolate taste. Just tastes artificial. cloyingly sweet top to bottom.

80 Fuller's ESB United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 3.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nose of bread and raisins and licorice. Medium copper body is topped by a moderate short lived head with very little lacing. Mouth is nicely slick, a bit under-carbonated and full.. Flavor is fairly complex. Tart apple, carmel malts, dark ripe fruit. Finish is slightly sweet. A very nice ESB!

81 Wychwood Hobgoblin United Kingdom English Strong Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nose is mild with roasted malt predominating and some dark ripe fruit.Body is light brown with copper hint, fairly still with a moderate camel-colored head that leaves a decent coat and slight lace. Mouth is medium bodied, a touch creamy decent tingle. Flavor profile is round with toasty malts well balanced with fruits esters and moderate resinous hops. Finish is nice with a touch of honey that turns to a slightly sour citrus and it lingers. I think this is going to get better after I let it warm a bit. Yup I am really enjoying this, maybe some prune, some chocolate, some orange,Nice Brew.

83 Black Isle Organic Export Scotch Ale United Kingdom Scottish Ale 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Added this beer as it does not appear to be the same as the Black Isle Scotch Ale, the abv on that is 4.5, this export is 7.9 Aroma of toasted carmelly malts, cotton candy, and some vinous notes. Deep brown body with ruby hints that is not quite opaque topped with a moderate head that is off white and leaves a long lasting skim coat with little lace. The mouth if fairly full, slick and tingly, carbonation nicely done, really fills the palate. This is a sweet beer with a clean finish, quite well done. Leaves hints of coffee at the end with some tobacco. Up front its ripe dark fruit and toffee. The hops are minimal and indistinct but they balance the flavor nicely. Not normally my cup of tea but this is a very nice beer. Alcohol a bit present as a warming in the finish. Suspect this profile will round out and be a bit more complex as it warms. Well done!

84 Black Isle Export Oatmeal Stout United Kingdom Imperial Stout 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Chocolate and licorice notes as well as grape juice in the nose. A vigorous pour produces a decent frothy camel-colred head with good retention and decent lace. Body is opaque very dark brown with a hint of ruby. Mouth is medium and a bit chewy and quite fizzy, maybe too fizzy. Licorice is the predominant flavor for sure with some bitter chocolate and burnt grain at the ending. This rounds out a bit after a few swigs, that initial Licorice hit is a bit shocking, but now I am starting to enjoy the brew. There is some black cherry flavor hidden in there, starts sweet and goes bitter in the middle with a surprisingly clean aftertaste. 2nd Black Aisle I have had and both are high quality beer making.

85 Samuel Smith Organic Lager United Kingdom Lager 3.6

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

When first poured has the scent of bread and yeast. After a few sips the aroma goes fruity and spicey, almost champagne-like, grapes, prunes citrus. A nice complicated nose! Nice tight head that is rather short-lived. Pours a clear medium gold, being organic I was expecting perhaps a bit of cloud but its not there. Minimumal but decent lace. Mouthfeel is thin, clean and tingly again not unlike a champagne. Flavor starts sweet and fruity, lemon..pear and a bit of fresh bread. Spice comes on rapidly in midtaste,,,pepper and a vague clove flavor. Finish is slightly bitter hops and fairly clean, maybe a tiny hint of skunk or maybe just a slight sweet and sour. A very exceptable lager but perhaps a bit over priced, at least here in the states.

86 Samuel Smith Organic Ale United Kingdom Blonde Ale 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

This ale pours a soft copper color with a big and very short-lived, ivory colored, fuzzy head that disolves to a nice lace wiht excellent lace on the sides of the glass and the has the ability to raise a very slight head with each swig. The nose is soft and short-lived with prominent yeast and lemon and a slight deep fig-like note. Mouth feel is thin and clean with a bit of tingle on the back of the mouth. Some may find it under-carbonated but I thik the fiz is very nicely done, each swig brings a bit of effervescence up from the bottom to form a pale new lace. The flavor starts sweet and a bit bready ,then immeadiately goes to a floral hops followed by a nice hops bitterness and finshes very clean with a hint of lemon. I got just a touch of a chemically taste in the finish but after half a few swigs I no longer detect it, I think its a drinking temperature issue. This ale tastes much better very cool than cold! This is a quite nicely done, I was going to say English but I see its classified as blonde, ale. It would make a killer session beer but it would not be an inexpensive session. It definately tastes like more.

87 Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout United Kingdom Oatmeal Stout 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

An amzaingly fast to dissapear nose of rasberrys and malt.. wish it had stuck around a bit longer. Also a fairly short-lived head taht is carmel in color and leaves moderate lace. Pours a deep deep brown body that is quite opaque. Mouthfeel is nice... good tingle fairly slippery, perhaps a touch thin. Taste is becoming interesting.Flavor at first seems simple it is going almost straight to the end taste but the end taste, while brief, seems quite complex. I think I may have poured this a bit too cold and am going to let it warm a bit before more tasting. The hops in this stout are not shy. It hits with a combination of bitter and floral with a touch of orange peel, and super clean for a stout. I'm not getting much nid taste or perhaps the begining middle and end are incredibly well folded into one another. It goes carmel and toasty and brown sugar very rapidly which is combined with a nice bready tatse and follows with oats. It ends clean and slightly sweet and then if followed with a slightly sour and smokey aftertaste. There is a plesant tobacco taste in the end note as well. Alcohol is completley masked. Second pour at a slightly warmer temperature. Much less fruit in the nose, some chocolate and some grape. Interstingly it smells a bit like a smoked gouda. The head is lasting a bit longer this time and is lovely to look at a nice combination of tight foam broken up with pockets of large bubbles. Teh initial simplicity of this stout is deceptive. For me it required more detailed concentration then many beers but that attention revealed a quite complex and wonderfully crafted stout. This oen burbs geat too!

88 Duchy Originals Organic Ale United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Aroma is a nice mix of malts and hops...pine, lemon peel, rosemary, and apples with a nice bready overtone. The aroma lasts! This is an aromatic brew. Appearance is in the eye of the beholder I guess but this one looks lovely to me. Pours a medium deep copper-colored body that is slightly foggy and is just a bit more red than most copper-colored ales ...bronze I guess. Caps with a very foamy head that is nicely done and lasts a moderate amount of time. No constantly rising bubbles but a nice thin foam remains on the top and excellent lacing. Mouth is real nice, very soft and velvety, smooth and suprisingly a nice hint of thickness with a decent tingle. Like the nose promised there is a good amount of hops in this beer. It hits a bit nutty-malty,yeasty, a little rosemary astingency in the taste --- not a strong flavor but nicely done. Leads to a nice yet not terribly complex sweet sour thing and ends tart and dry. Reminisent of an IPA with less hops bitterness, this is a very drinkable ale. Alcohol is fully masked. I drank a LOT of English bitters in the pubs in 73 when I was 19, This is the first I have had since. For a beer that in most ways is modest I am suprised how high my rating is going to come out. This is just very well done!

89 Newcastle Brown Ale United Kingdom Brown Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Big big nose on this brew. Sweet fruits, figs, raisins, orange and nice spice notes mostly pepper ... a winey nose. Pours a real nice frothy pale carmel-colored head. Medium to dark brown clear body with not much continuing fiz, somehow thin in appearance. Excellent lacing. Mouth feel is thin and a bit flat, the carbonation is underdone. Flavor was strong on the first swig but seems to dissapear as I continue drinking. There is a lot of toasted malts and very mild hop flavors, it hits sweet then tingles a bit with the touch of hops, but stays sweet throughout and ends fairly dry. Not complicated and a touch winey. No doubt an easy session brew.

90 Ridgeway Bad Elf Winters Ale United Kingdom English Strong Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

review from memory (last night) on this one. A pale copper color and decent head with OK lace. Very hoppy nose, pine and spice. Suprising hops profile in the flavor considering htis is an english strong made by an English brewer. There answer to American Pales I guess, which is nice to see. Pretty well balanced, not as hoppy as an APA but mabye for an English brew it lives up top their standard of what very hoppy is. Some malt is present but not what you would expect in an English Strong. Fairly clean dn dry after taste. Light to average mouthfeel and teh alcohol is well masked. A very pleasant beer. If you want hops without being killed by it this is a nice choice and would be a great session beer.

91 Samuel Smith Pure Brewed Lager United Kingdom Lager 3.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Nice light nose of cloves lemmongrass yeast and cashews. Beautiful meringue head with moderate retention sits over a very pale and clear golden body. Leaves minimal lace. Mouthfeel is very very light, slippery water but with a very nicely done fiz. Its been awhile since I've had a lager but this flavor seems very pale. There is a hint of yeast in the middle and a tiny bit of hops at the end with a slight mineral taste throughout. Goes a bit sour at the end. I also get a hint of corn or some other odd grain flavor. Not terribly off-putting but not worth the money IMHO. I need to go back and read my review of SS organic lager, which I recall liking. I think this is its very poor cousin.

92 Morland Old Speckled Hen United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Mild in the nose, sweet and sour and perhaps a bit cloying, malt bread pepper and citrus. Very nice very very long-lasting head is just off-white and foamy, sitting atop a pale copper body. Very creamy mouth with medium to heavy body. Flavor of ripe banana meeting a small dose of hops bitterness, and a sweet maple syrup flavor to boot. Alcohol is present as well. Eventaully goes a bit sour. Not the way I remember English bitters tasting in the 70's pubs in London, close but a bit heavier and more sour, unique.

93 Ridgeway Criminally Bad Elf United Kingdom English Barleywine 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Aroma of apples and oranges and a touch of pepper. Modest head off white with large bubbles sits atop a hazy ice tea colored body. Minimal head retention and lacing; not surprising in a Barelywine. Mouthfeel is thin and fizzy. Flavor is not bad, fairly complex. Definately a sweet sour battle going on with a slightly offputting aftertaste that is a bit astringent...perhaps chemically. Has some citrus notes and some yeast on the mid pallet. The alcohol is quite present.

Sweet brown sugar/caramel nose with malt and hops present as well as some dark ripe fruit. Clear dark dark brown body with a lot of ruby overtones very minimal head with no lace. Mouth is surprisingly light bodied. Taste hits sweet, strongly bitter hops kick in, hints of coffee and fig and some slight alcohol and carmelized malts, pretty nicely balanced. Tastes almost like a slightly smoked porter. but thinner.

Massive NEIPA nose, tropical fruit galore...pineapple, citrus, mango. Pale gold body fully hazed with minimal white head with some retention and lace. Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Not a lot of noise, tropical notes, maybe a hint of banana, perhaps a hint of the oats. Medium amber body hazed with off white head that leaves a skim coat and good lace. Mouth is medium bodied, a bit creamy, slick, and spot on carbonation. Pretty tasty, not complex, easy drinking. Tangerine pith in the front, moderately bitter, clean dry finish, some astringent aftertaste.

99 Kent Falls Super Sparkle United States IPA 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 9

Fairly faint nose orange, pine, yeast, cotton candy. Moderate white head produces a bit of lace over a hazed apricot colored body. Average body on the mouth, slick, decent carbonation. There beers are all starting to taste similar, this one a bit more mild then others. Very drinkable, mild version of a standard NEIPA profile. Leaves a nice tingle at the end and the mild taste makes you want to hit it right away again. Not sure if thats a good or bad thing :) There is some pine and some almond behind the light tropical notes, wondering about the grain bill here...... wheat? Again very drinkable just not remarkable.

100 Lagunitas Hazy Wonder United States IPA 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 5

Nose is quite grassy considering the huge hop bill (link in description if to a brewer's youtube tasting of the beer), sour fruit, sage, dough. Appearance is odd, NO haze (unlike the vid) crud on bottom of glass and small crud in suspension. Medium yellow, good head, some lace. I understand its unfiltered bkut the crud is off putting, will post a picture. Mouth is on the thin side, good tingle. Taste is mild, some aspirin, herbal, flinty, not picking up all the tropical notes much.
