General Beer Discussion by AABREWER318

i saw a sam adams commercial. they said that hops are to beer what grapes are to wine....i'm not the greatest with analogies.....but wouldnt it be fairer to say that 'BARLEY is to beer what grapes are to wine'?? Both providing the necessary sugars for fermentation.....and also the 'main ingredient'(along with water, which is in already in the grapes)...........The Hops would be more like the barrels that infuse flavor to the wine. no? Sam Adams aint bad....but i'm calling their bluff here.....whose with me? This message was edited by aabrewer318 at 4/11/2005 2:24:54 PM.

In Reply To #1 I agree. Sounds like some advertising exec was sucking too hard on the straw in his Michelob Ultra and made his brain collapse. Give 'em an "A" for effort, but a "D" for execution. PS - Perhaps they'd get better results if they had a decent beer before they started their brainstorming session.

I don't think the analogy is in a scientific sense, but more of a what really defines a certain beer. I would rank hops as the most important ingredient that defines a certain beer, with the yeast and the malt below that. But then, I like the hoppier beers. :)

Has anyone noticed that this seems to have changed the tide in 'beer' marketing? There's the new Bud ads with George Clooney and the employees, and the Coors commerical with the owner/founder/ceo/whatever up in the mountains.

In Reply To #1 This is just a marketing thing. I could be wrong, but does anyone know a person who claims to like beers with barley? Maybe, but I think people use hops as a characteristic much more often to describe a beer they like/dislike. By saying this I think they can connect with more people. I too like the hoppy beers though.
