Why isn't Scotch Ale a style?

Website Comments by MARTINSANDERS

I see Scottish Ale as a style, but a Scotch Ale is a different beast than a Scottish Ale according to both CAMRA and the BJCP. SCottish Ales (like 80/_ types) are light gold in colour while a Scotch Ale is brown to black, uses different malt types, and generally higher in alcohol.

All good questions. I think the last time this site had a review of beer styles was around the year 2010. We have a private forum for the admins and in that was a big section on style arguments. I let others fight that stuff out and can’t say that I’ve followed beer much in recent years. It’s something BeerPal should look into but not until I get the new site up and running. It’s getting close!

We never discussed this one. We talked about gose as a style in 2012 or so, but there wasn't enough of them at the time to make a decision. Since then, there are goses and gratzers every where and I am the only admin left. I do think that Scottish Ale and Scotch Ale should be separated, and I think we need a style for Gose/Gratzer as well. With regards to the posts regarding India Pale Lagers and Belgian IPA, I think we're okay there. IPL is a "lager" and we have a catch all for that, and I tend to use the brewer's description when looking at Belgian/White IPAs to decide where to put those but that is more an American

Scotch Ale deserves a category of its own. Scottish Ales are more doubtful, as they could be said to be just varieties of English Premium Bitters or Pale Ales, but now I'm stepping on some nationalistic toes.
