I killed domestic beer

General Beer Discussion by ED

I just posted a review of Schlitz a few bars ago, and it ocurred to me that some of the domestics that I used to buy, have gone away for that very reason. I live in the Pacific Northwest. I used to buy Rainier and Oly, Blitz and Lucky Lager, and Schlitz. That was when I was younger and had limited funds. I would occasionally run into a cash windfall and go to a little store that sold Imports. I'd see what else there was in the way of imports not already on the shelf- like Becks or Heineken. Pilsner Urquell, Red Stripe, dos XX, San Miguel- some were better than the aforementioned "domestics"- though my friends and I were convinced that they were all way better. Don't get me wrong, I love to try every beer I can get my hands on; but by staying away from the beers I used to enjoy- and it seems I am not alone here, the market for them declined enough to put many in jeopardy. Too bad. Anyone know if Schlitz and Rainier are even being brewed still? Thanks for hanging in there during my rant- better have a cold one...

I don't know about Rainier, but I had Schlitz not long ago. I thought it was about on par with the other beers in its price range, too (Falstaff, Olympia, etc.). This reminds me, is Hamm's still being made? I haven't been able to find that one.

Thanks for answering. Hamms- from the land of Sky Blue Water is still available in the Pacific Northwest- they have a canned draft beer that is fairly decent- I like the original Hamms as well. Is Falstaff made anywhere still?

I had it not too long ago, probably six months. 5.49 for a 12-pack, I new it would be terrible but I had a few. I have not seen it since however. I would not buy it again, no way. By the way, I found it here in GA in case you were wondering.

In Reply To #1 We still get Rainier here in Salem,Oregon now and again. Its not that good. Also a old old beer called Heidelburg( that apprently was once popular here in the PNW)..that sucked big time. Yes it seems the abundance of micro brews in the PNW has killed the old regional brews stone dead. Hell even Weinhards doesnt do their Red Ale or Porter anymore and i haveent seen the excellent Blackberry Wheat for ages.

In Reply To #5 I fear it is not so much the micro brews that have done in the old guard, but the main stream commercials. Two very different price ranges. If one thing kills off the micros it will be they are way outta line on bang for the buck for the average beer drinker. Weinhards is not my beer, but sure would hate to loose em. A very good commercial operation. By the way when is the last time you all seen a Hamms commercial? The bear and the theme song was always a big smile maker for me. What about Old Style? That was some swill that had a big local up yonder back in the day. This message was edited by Brad Pear at 2/15/2005 10:51:01 AM.

Brad Pear, Good call. You may be right on with your point; but I get the feeling that the death of the working man staples are inevitable for all but the King of Beers, Miller, maybe one or two more. I do remember the great "FUN" commercials put on by the Hamms' Bear. Sort of a friendly outdoors feel to them. Now everyone seems to be so PC about having a good time drinking taboo. It won't be long until they launch a full on Phillip Morris campaign "Keep your kids away from cigarettes because there is no safe cigarettes". Yet they keep right on making them. Why don't they just say. Here's the product- keep out of reach of children- by the way... these things will kill ya :) Hamms in my area: Yes there is a great looking paint job on the side wall of a neigborhood tavern at 122nd and SE Powell in Portland featuring 2 painted Hamms Bears- I always smile when I drive by. My old man used to have a waterfall sign by Hamms over his bar (home) back in 1969. I wish I had it today $900.oo on eBay I can't "Bear" it.
