The Sam Adams Gift Pack.....

General Beer Discussion by OIZNOP

Is there any truth to what I was told by one of my retailers that Sam Adams did NOT include Old Fezziwig and the Holiday Porter in their annual Christmas pack this year???.....If so, whoever is responsible for this marketing brain fart needs to be FIRED TWICE....IMMEDIATELY....What say you???...is this the case???....because I am having serious trouble finding them in individual bottles as well.... Haven't even had time to look, but Old fezz is an annual favorite, so as slowrunner77 indicates - I hope it's in there. I like the holiday porter, but usually ended up using them as a baste/us jus for my Christmas standing rib roast.

Ok...here's the response I received after e-mailing Sam Adams: Thank you for your interest in finding more Samuel Adams in your area! We love when drinkers contact us because it helps us better understand how they experience Samuel Adams. This season we moved to a different mix in our variety packs. For the Samuel Adams Winter Favorites pack, the correct mix for a 12 pack is 2 Boston Lager, 4 Winter Lager, 2 Old Fezziwig, and 4 White Christmas. While our 24 packs include those four styles plus Chocolate Bock. All of our seasonal variety packs offer beers that are not available by themselves, but are available only in these variety packs. Above where the beer styles are listed there is an indication of how many bottles of each style should be included. We often put unique beers such as the Old Fezziwig and Chocolate Bock in the variety packs that are not offered in stand-alone 6-packs. As a small craft brewer (1% of the U.S. market) we are big enough to be able to make all of these great brews but not big enough to offer all of them in 6-packs by themselves. We made this change to provide our drinkers with a unique drinking experience. I put forth the question, fellow beerpals....Is a Sam Adams a "small craft brewer?"...as they say?....10 years ago, I might have believed that, but in this response filled with the usual corporate marketing blather, I am not so sure I do now.... At any rate, I just got back from a local bottle house after getting a hair cut, and they had the Fezziwig...I got their last two bottles....but the porter is no where to be found this year....what a shame..[:p][:p][:p][:p]..Glass half full this year....glad I was able to eek out a few for the yuletide....

I wouldn't call them small because of how ubiquitous their beer is. Clearly, they acknowledge this criticism because they added a definition for "small craft brewery). But if market shares are the determining factor, then Bud, Coors, and Miller are the only breweries that are not "small." If SA doesn't crack the 1% mark, then nobody else stands a chance of doing so. And if that is the case, then what the hell is the unholy trinity so worried about? Oh, I get it...it's like walking through a cloud of those Alaskan mosquitoes. They're small, but there is so damn many of them...

Since it's a brandmate, I figgered I'd put Sam Adams Light in here. [}:)] http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/35/1503/?view=beer&sort=&start=75 [^] Really, it gets an overall Thumbs Up. I was surprised, and not really looking for a light beer. But now I'd like to try it sometime. Could Sam Adams & Light Beer both garner a new fan?

I remember first having Sam Adams light and thinking "this isn't bad for a light beer." One of the best, in fact. But that's a huge caveat. Especially these days with all the excellent and flavorful 3-5% beers on the market, there's no reason to drink a light beer. With the options available at the same price point, I haven't been returning to Sam Adams or trying many new ones for a long time now.
