Favorite player from the big 4?
Non-Beer Discussion by SLOWRUNNER77
Who's your current (and all-time) favorite player(s) in baseball, football, basketball, and hockey? Are they on your favorite team? I'm a Giants fan, but have so much respect for Rodgers and Fitz, that I follow them more closely than any Giant. Sadly, most or all of my favorite basketball are long gone, and I've kinda lost interest, though I still follow some... current: MLB-Mariano Rivera &/or Derek Jeter NFL-Aaron Rodgers, Larry Fitzgerald NBA-don't really have a current favorite - Amar'e Stoudemire by default or KG (happy when he got a ring) NHL-Henrik Lundqvist all-time: MLB-Rivera/Jeter & Don Mattingly NFL-Montana, Barry Sanders, LT NBA-Patrick Ewing NHL-Mark Messier

I take it you don't like George Brett nor Alice Cooper. Either that or you're an asshole. No one said Ted Williams couldn't hit. I wasn't comparing Brett to Musial. Ted Williams was probably the greatest hitter ever, or Ty Cobb... either way, I merely stated that Brett was one of my favorite players and he won batting titles during three different decades - that is a fact. I didn't make the numbers work, I merely reported them. If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. If I was born a few years later, I'd be younger. Just stating what happened on the diamond. No need to get your panties in a wad.

Last night's All-Star HR Derby reminded me of another of my favorites: Alice Cooper...er, I mean... the only man to win batting titles in three different decades: George Freaking Brett

That is freakin' awesome. I had no idea. Well, because I don't follow hockey, but...still....awesome stats right there.

No other professional team sport in the world can claim a continuity of 3 players over such a long period of time (76 years, 4 months 16 days). The closest such occurrence in baseball involves Curt Simmons who started in 1947, played against Nolan Ryan in 1967, and there are several active players who played against Ryan before his career ended in 1993......19 seasons ago. But to tie the NHL record, one of those active players that played against Ryan would have to play another 11 seasons after this one, meaning a 30 season career.....not likely.

I tried my hardest to copy Brett's batting stance (albeit from the right side). I loved this guy, AND kinda rooted for them in the 80's, along with Willie Wilson, Steve "Bye Bye" Balboni, Brett Saberhagen, The Quis... But this....can't forget this... Not many people hit a HR off of Goose Gossage, at least not while he was a NY Yankee...dood was unhittable. I'd probably go a little ballistic too if I cranked one outta the yard, and then was called out right after I get in the dugout to have a cup of Gatorade and a mouthfull of chew.
Isn't it? I first discovered it about a decade ago and started looking into baseball because there are far more 20+ career guys in baseball than in hockey so I was sure it would have something similar. As a hockey historian and part-time NHL statistician I do have access to people at the Elias Sports Bureau and it took a couple of weeks for somebody to come back to me with the Curt Simmon/Nolan Ryan combination and we worked off that. I have a list at home of who the remaining players are who played against Ryan as of 2010, I'll need to revisit it just to see where the number ends up at.

George Brett was one of my favourites too. I didn't start paying attention to MLB until the Blue Jays arrived in '77 and he was the defending AL batting champ and always seemed to be on This Week in Baseball. When I started playing baseball, I started at 3rd because of Brett. Jim Palmer was the defending Cy Young Award winner and became my favourite pitcher and so on. The good ol' days. George Brett is also the principal owner of the Spokane Chiefs junior hockey team.......he's always doing something to make himself likeable!

Somehow I missed this one... Current MLB - ? NFL - Wes Welker NBA - ? NHL - ? All-Time MLB - Bo Jackson NFL - Bo Jackson NBA - Julius Irving NHL - ? I enjoy hockey, just can't name a player. Completely given up on baseball and basketball at any level.
