DFH brewing Cornholio
General Beer Discussion by SLOWRUNNER77
If this has beavis on the label, I just might wet myself... Balance is the word of the day. The muscles I pulled in my right thigh trying to keep up with the Short's Brewery gang playing softball yesterday are perfectly balanced against the muscle I pulled near my left ribs water-skiing on beautiful Elk lake this morning. Brewday has arrived. This beer shall be called Cornholio. It's made with MI horehound (kinda like an minty rootbeery herb), Indiana red popcorn, and Delaware & Cape May Beach Plums. I got to try the test batch, along with the excellent pizza at Short's Pub last night. It's really nice; 7-ish abv ,roasty nutty notes upfront, balanced against a little dark fruit flavor underneath. Tony from Short's spent many hours grinding and toasting the red popcorn our buddy Nick Floyd sent along in a McGyvered coffee mill. Short's is truly a family affair. Joe runs the joint with wife Leah who was managing the pub last night. All kinds of preggers and pretty and chasing their son Simon around the humming kitchen on one of the busiest nights of the year. They shoot to keep 20 of their beers on tap at the pub and they had a great line-up last night. My favs were Huma and India Spruce pils. The whole vibe of Short's is family-centric. The larger family is the whole staff, who work and play really well together (again, that balance thing). Today brewer Krut took a break in mash in to let me help toss in some of the red popcorn. While you can't see it, I'm balancing on a 17 ft tall unicycle while adding the popcorn. Sans pants.

I am not so bothered about their gimmicks as their prices. I don't think I have bought anything from them in at least 2 years. I have never had a beer from them that justifies the extra 30-50% price tag vs. many other brewers. Same with Three Floyds and even Anchor. Thankfully I can get plenty of good stuff that is relatively affordable! [:)]

Sounds disgusting, but it sounds like a typical DFH gimmicky shot at yet another concoction. Too bad they didn't make up some historical myth for this one to genuinize the recipe and drive even more curiousity so folks can somehow mysteriously travel back in time to a really cool civilization via the beer (and some hallucinagens?). If these guys would just sit back and try to friggin brew beer. They frustrate the snot out of me and don't produce a single product of quality or beerness to make it in my fridge on ANY regular basis... and I try to have a DE beer around all the time. Sad. (I used to be more indifferent about DFH, but....)

Palo Santo & Festina Peche are my favorites from DFH. Once in a while I'll pick up some Raison D'Etre and Indian Brown as I think both are consistently wonderful. Midas Touch gets an honorable mention for being good and differnt. But that's about it. DFH = kitchy offerings, that's not going to change. I do agree that out of their entire portfolio only a handful are worthwhile to me. This is the sad aspect for me since it's such a small percentage of beers that I find really good from them.

Wow! Talk about different ends of the spectrum. Of course, Palo Santo is easily my favorite...but i have Festina in the fridge right now. FYI - it's better old! I got a half price 4 pack last year out of season and all that happened was slightly less sweet and more tart. So now each year I'll get one 4-pack fresh and hope for an oldy late in the year.

I think that's a bit harsh. Their standard offerings are all decent. 60 min and 90 min are both good examples. Indian Brown is pretty darned good for a darker, sweeter beer. They are definitely beers of decent quality. Their thing is doing new and different. I don't despise Sam for liking to tinker and be creative. I do agree that their goofy beers are probably more misses than hits, but they're always distinctive and memorable. *shrug*

c'mon man - you got to be accustomed to the DFH hate by now. It pops up regularly, though by some miracle they're still a 96th percentile brewer by the numbers, even with the haterism. [;)]

Is using popcorn in the mash a way to get more starch in there? If so...why not just use corn starch/slurry?

Maybe a little harsh, but the basic sentiment is accurate and to the point.

Both the 60, the 90 (as well as the Shelter for that matter) are close to undrinkable by me. I will say this, for a local brewer that I would love to support, I NEVER buy them. EVER. The Indian brown *is* decent, but it's not a go to beer, just not that drinkable overall.

Aside from some of the brewpub only stuff that I've had (especially the hoppy / less sweet styles), a lot more misses for me. Which, by themselves aren't that bad, but along with the gimmick and a WEAK "standard" lineup is highly disappointing. If they had a core that they were really good at, then the one offs would be more acceptable, hit or miss. I honestly don't know HOW they sell so much 60minute as their flagship beer. I really don't. It's pretty poor, and if you drink it right after a real IPA, you'll find it pretty nasty tasting.
