SA Chocolate Bock
General Beer Discussion by CHANGEUP45
Ok, I finally found this beer but stopped short of actually buying it. Is $15.99 for a bottle that appeared slightly larger than pint sized worth it? I have been wanting to try this beer, but couldn't bring myself to pay that much.
On another note: I finally found Stone Ruination and actually preferred the regular Stone IPA. Ruination seemed too one dimensional (hops hops hops), although it was still very good. Also tried Dogfish 90 minute IPA, and I must say prefer the 60 minute over it.

In Reply To #6 You mentioned you were going to take a brewery tour. Have you looked into that? You may get a free sample at the brewery. Every now and then they'll pour a bottle of the Utopias too. If you thought Chocolate Bock was expensive, try paying for a Utopia.

In Reply To #7 No, I haven't checked any further into it but I will. That just sounds like fun, drunk fun that is. That's a good point, maybe I'll go on the tour first and see what they let me try. Utopia? I guess I'm unfamiliar with that.
In Reply To #8 Utopia is a unique ale, 25% abv. Sam Adams released it in these ridiculous looking bottles, and is charging $100 per bottle. They also released a Millenium as well that was priced at $150-$200 a bottle. Now THAT'S nuts. http://www.samueladams.com/world_of_beer.aspx Click on the Extreme Beer link.

In Reply To #9 WOW that makes me not wanting to pay $16 for a beer seem really cheap. 25% for a beer? That's crazy... and I'd be willing to bet I wouldn't even like it.
In Reply To #11 I agree it's not worth the price, having tried it myself. I think mine was $16 but I had a bp member ship it to me so it was $23 total. While interesting, and being in a cool bottle, it wasn't my cup of tea. If you have money to burn, I'd say go for it. I'm also surprised you preferred the 60min. I like the 90 much more and bought a case of it when the owner came to my local distributor one night with free samples of several of their amazing brews. I believe stone ruination is just about the only IPA i've had that rivals the 90. Of course, this is all my personal opinion.

In Reply To #12 Yeah, that fancy bottle almost got me... then I saw the price tag and price prevailed. Since there are so many other beers I haven't tried yet, there's no reason for me to waste money on it yet. It makes sense that you think the 90 minute and Stone Ruination are very good and very close in quality. In both cases I preferred the "lesser" one, STone IPA and 60 minute. I guess I don't like the really strong IPA's. It's the sour flavor that turns me off a bit, although I still thought the Ruination was a great beer.
I finally broke down and bought this on. I have been in this beverage store many, many times in the last 3 weeks and have gotten closer and closer to buying it and I finally did. I have not tried it yet but I will very soon, I hope it is worth what I paid for it.
I also broke down and bought the Chocolate bock. It was dissapointing at best. It you want a nice chocolate flavored beer that rocks go with the Black Chocolate stout by Brooklyn. Much better. I know that I would be comapring a bock with a stout, but at the end of the day we are talking about beer. I would alway suggest that you try every beer for yourself of course, so, when you buy the bock we can bash it together. Sorry Koch.
