Christmas Traditions

Non-Beer Discussion by FARGINGBASTIGE6

Remember the Festivus pole from Seinfeld? Anyone got any Christmas traditions? I usually prepare a Christmas Eve dinner for the family - I've done this every year since 1997, so I guess it has become a tradition: Bacon-wrapped beef filets, garlic & Swiss cheese mashed potatoes and asparagus roasted with balsamic vinegar, olive oil & basil. Aside from the meal, I just try to spend time with my family.

We Italians have the 7 varieties of fish on Christmas Eve, which stem from an old Catholic Church law about not eating meat on Christmas Eve, and the 7 comes from the 7 sacraments of the church. The menu can consist of any kind of fish, such as Cod Fish, Calamari, Eel, Smelts, Sardines/Anchovies, Linguine w/Clam Sauce and Scallops, etc. My mom is getting on in years and doesn't have the stamina to do all of that cooking anymore, so I go to a friends house on Christmas eve where the 7 varieties are available, and spend Christmas day w/Mom, Dad, Aunt, Uncle and Cousins. It makes for a wonderful holiday. Oiz

Very nice tradition. I'm neither Italian or Catholic but that sounds like a cool way to celebrate Christmas.

I put up the festivus pole, which is really just a pool skimmer with the skimmer removed, have a feast, air my grievances, and then it's on to FEATS OF STRENGTH! Festivus ends when I'm pinned. According to this tradition, it is currently Festivus, 1997.

We don't have any big family traditions anymore, really. We used to, but as everyone grew up & grew old, we've not done anything like when I was a child. We are trying to start a couple of small traditions with our girls. Each one gets a new ornament each year right now. As they get older we will start a tradition of donating their old toys/clothes to a charity to make room for newer toys/clothes and to teach them that it's just as important to give to others as it is to get for themselves.

Stay up till midnight eating/drinking/twiddling our thumbs. Someone guilts someone else into dressing up as Santa "for the kids". The suit smells like ass because it is never washed. All the fat ass adults wrestle in line for the chance to break in Santa's lap. Santa gives out about 6-7 gifts before throwing out his/her back. The one or two actual kids are usually wailing because they've been woken up for this confusing spectacle. Over-sized sweaters are already being chosen as potential candidates for regifting. Is this summer sausage safe to eat? What am I going to do with a $15 gift card to Hot Topic? Enough Old Spice to last till 2018. It was a good year. [:D]The kids contemplate which toy to break first. No batteries you cheapskate?! Smash goes your coffee table. We eventually all then sit in silence while playing on our phones, contemplating the evening, waiting till sober enough to head home. Shit, we forgot the kid! Drive back.
