Dogwood Brewing Closes
General Beer Discussion by CLASH
http://www.ajc.com/news/content/business/0904/10dogwood.html This is horrible news! Dogwood IMO was the best micro brewery in the Southeast. They just finished brewing an Imperial Porter that was being raved about amongnst the beer community. They had a barleywine ready to go and now they probably won't even release it. Man it sucks being into good beer and living in the South.

Well that link doesn't seem to work, here's part of the article... The keg’s run dry at Atlanta-based Dogwood Brewing Co. The local brewery, founded in 1996 at the peak of the micro-brew boom, has been losing money for years and is shutting its doors, said founder Crawford Moran. He blames the demise of his small company, which had revenue of roughly $500,000 last year, on several factors, including the overall beer market, the Georgia regulatory environment and his own lack of start-up capital. He started the company with $750,000, which he acknowledges is not nearly enough for such a capital-intensive business. "To put it simply, we just couldn’t make ends meet," said Moran, who started the company after earning a masters degree in comparative literature at the University of North Carolina, because he loved beer. "As good as our beer is and as strong as our reputation is, it just wasn’t enough. And at the end of the day, we have to pay the bills and try to make an honest living."
In Reply To #2 Very sad, especially since I never got to try the Imperial Porter. A GA friend claims that they failed to market their beers very well, which had something to do with the failure, along with the low initial investment. Either way, it's sad to see a good brewery close. I wish the best for the brewer and owners, maybe they can set up shop again and do it smarter this time. There's always hope.
While I hate seeing the brewery close, I do hope the brew-meister gets another job somewhat locally. They did have some good brews. Makes me wonder....with the new laws in Ga., I wonder if maybe that didn't contribute to their demise. On the flip side, I can't help but wonder if maybe the new laws would have helped if only they'd been able to hold on for just a little longer.
What!! I just got done posting about Dogwood in this forum and then I see this bad news. Their Imperial Porter was amazing. That is too bad. Fortunately, the store up the street has that porter in stock and tomorrow I am going to buy as many of those porters as I can!
What's up Clash, I do have some good news about the Dogwood Brewing Company. On October 25th they are having a wake at the brewery in Atlanta. They will have all their beers on tap including their imperial porter and maybe the beer you referred too. Write back!
Cottrell, I saw you have not been able to try Dogwood's Imperial Stout. I have looked at the forum on beer swapping and I guess many people do it. The gas station right of the street has about twenty-five bottles left. They are in 22oz or 24oz bottles. If you would like I can get you some and send it to you.
