A-Rod

Non-Beer Discussion by COTTRELL

Well, I don't mean to start a war with this one, but what do y'all think about the A-Rod trade? I was born a Yankees fan, and am getting real sick of hearing people bitch about them. It's amazing how quickly the Red Sox fans forget that they tried to sign A-Rod as well. Now they're complaining that we're "buying another pennant." Sorry Red Sox fans, sorry that our owner is competitive enough to invest money into the team. Let me explain this for the teams such as the Marlins or Tigers. You get some good players, re-sign them, get more players to build around the good ones you already have. This will result in a team that wins more often. More wins means more fans. Onces you start filling up your bleachers, you have more money to get more/better players. You can continue to grow using this method, and create a great team. The Marlins on the other hand have a different formula which looks something like this: get great young players, win a world series and gain some fans, sell all your players, lose your fans, complain about not having money to stay competitive. Wake up people, it's basic business strategies. The Rangers started the fiasco by giving A-Rod his monumental contract, the Yankees just found a way to make the contract work for them. I don't want to hear that the Rangers are stupid either, Soriano is an amazing player who has more potential than almost anyone else in the league. So the Rangers freed up some money, got a player who has loads of talent, lost one of slightly higher caliber. Sounds like both teams win to me. Well, that was my rant; reactions? opinions?

In Reply To #21 The latest chapter in the Sox Yankees rivalry was awesome. There is no other rivalry like this in sports and I question whether or not there ever has been.

In Reply To #22 I agree its up there... Top 2-3, but the top rivalry in all of sports is Duke/North Carolina bar none. Seperated by 16 miles and hatred for each other like no other. I used to live in Durham being a Carolina fan. Its tough. Then you have the Alabama/Auburn football rivalry and then I would say Sox/Yankees. Try to disagree... In Reply To #23 I've got to disagree as well. I spend part of 7 years in North Carolina so I know a little bit about that as well. If you're not a Sox fan or a Yankee fan I don't think you truly know the hatred involved. At least with Duke/NC you've got an argument... Alabama/Auburn? Not close. With those two you mentioned, they only play each other 2 or 3 times a year. Bama/Auburn is usually only once. That's it. How does that compare? The Sox/Yankees play each other 17 times during the regular season, each one of them played as if it were a playoff game. Plus they have a history dating way back to the early 1900's. I agree that Duke and NC hate each other and the fans hate each other as well but times that by 17 (well, 8 or 9) and you've got the Sox/Yankees.

In Reply To #23 I'm going to have to disagree as well. There's no other game in sports that leaves me exhausted just watching it. How often do the players in the Duke/NC games get into fights? A couple times a year? No? Oh, in that case it's not as big as the Yanks/Sox. And how many times are their physical fights in the stands during these rivalry games? None? Oh, then it isn't as big as the Yanks/Sox. It's incredible when you can send a fan into a rampage just by uttering "1918." College rivalries just can't be as big as professional sports, because none of the players stick around for more than 4 years! I see Duke/NC as a friendly competition that has some history to it. I see Yanks/Sox as an all out war that has dated back to the early 1900's. A 100 years war if you will, probably longer.

In Reply To #26 You are obviously biased a little bit(I can see you live in NE)... Maybe its more of a hatred in the Sox/Yankees rivalry but to the players it means everything in the world. If you dont beat your rival, the rest of the season doesnt mean a thing. In the baseball rivalry you just move on to the next game or next series without suicidal feelings. Fans dont have to fight to make a rival tops. Fans in the other two rivals, especially Bama/Auburn commit suicide every year and players base their career accomplishments on the rivalry game. Siblings dont marry fans of the opposite team, PERIOD! Corona did you live in the RTP area? If not, you dont get a real feeling of the value of what it means to live so close and always be one of the top teams in the ACC with the title on the line with a win or loss. These teams are usually tops and are highly ranked top 10 teams on average having to play each other. Pro players move on to other teams after 4-5 years tops.(ask a new Yankee or new RedSox player if they really hate the opposite team player? No...) They werent born to be a Yankee or Red Sox player. I was born to be a Tarheel, and the guy living next to me could easily have been born into a Duke family. You dont cross over, and you go to the school thats in your blood. Carolina Blue... I come from a Tarheel family and I also lived it first hand living in Durham. You must be thinking a rivalry is for the fans only? Its mainly a thing with the players which make a rivalry. Corona as I was telling you before, I know Tim Wakefield and he doesnt hate the Yankees like you hate the Yankees, he hates the batter hes facing in the box, wether that be a BlueJay or Twin. Your rivalry is mostly intense for you fans(No doubt about it), and sometimes it crosses over onto the field. This debate could go on forever, whos right or whos wrong. They are coming at different angles. A fans rivalry or a player rivalry... Kissmybass

In Reply To #28 Those are all nice rivalries but not close. Raiders/Chiefs? Giants/Dodgers? How do these even get mention. Montreal/Boston is bigger than Montreal/Toronto. Celtics/Lakers back in the 80's but that rivalry has died. I have started a new thread... a vote for the top rivalry.
