Healthy Hops

Industry News by TIMMYK77

Scientists have found that a certain compound in hops may help in preventing cancer. They don't think beer has enough to be of any use, but I say we keep drinking just in case! http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051115/ap_on_he_me/healthy_beer

I'm sure they're basing their judgement on the popular, cheap beers, with hardly any hops. Maybe a double IPA will save us!

After the story hit I did a bit of research on Xanthohumol (go 'head, call me a nerd). Basically even a Quintuple IPA won't give you a large enough dosage to have an affect. The substance is metabolised very quickly, so quickly in fact, that even if you take in a large amount, your body will only absorb a small amount. They say you need to drink 120 gallons of beer to get a sufficient amount. 120 gallons... a day (sounds like a challenge to me![:D] ). The study is exciting, not because it shows beer as being healthy, but because they've now isolated a very strong anti-oxidant. Researchers hope to be able to put this in a pill form, and are very skeptical that there will ever be a beer that can effectively administer the correct dosage. They believe that hops are the only source of xanthohumol, so we may start to see significant genetic engineering of the hop plant. Newer strains, with stronger antioxidant powers. Maybe even newer flavors suitable for brewing... but that's certainly not a focus.

Ok, I admit I didn't read the article. But if my beer has 10 times as much hop as the beer they're referring to, then we only need to drink 12 gallons a day. Isn't that reasonable? [:p]
