the thing is, what the re-visionists don't want you to know or are willing to admit to, that while hitler was indeed a monster, and by 1938 he was well on his way to implementing his horrible policies against the jewish people, the world was gripped by a massive depression and he managed to bring germany out of rather quick and before any other country. they may have been suspect ways that he did that, but he did it none-the-less. when the summer games went to munich in '36, their really was no other contender. this, i assume, is why time made him "man of the year", but unless we can actually read the article, these are just educated guesses.

In 1938 the US wasn't involved in World War II and for the most part we considered Hitler to be Europe's problem. Thats probably why. After Pearl Harbor got the US involved, that tone changed quickly. He sure wouldnt have been 1943's Man of the Year.

plus "the man of the year" was not always the most popular choice, but the person who generated the most news/interest. if click the link that alcoholic provided and dig deeper into the site, you not only come across the headlines for their choices- such as this one for the 1938 Hitler cover- "His figure strode over Europe with all the swagger of a conqueror". it may not be p.c., but it's not supposed to be. as a matter of fact, a scour of the site also shows joseph stalin twice- 1939 and 1942, kruschev in 57, and the ayatollah in 79. certainly these were bad people too.

Yeah, the "Time Man of the Year" award isn't meant to be a positive thing. It's just who they felt was the most newsworthy person at the time. I think the real controversy was when Earth was "Planet of the Year" in the 1980s. I'm pretty sure Mercury was pissed off about that.

All these responses are interesting. I, being a political science major, can shed more light on this choice but I do not have that much time at the present moment. Nonetheless, this was an interesting choice for a thread. [:)]

Geez, does that mean ur gonna fill us with a bunch of bull? LOL. [:D] C'mon, staley, chime in NOW. We want to hear from YOU! Time? Like I have time to spend on beer message boards now: Working 2 people's jobs at work, teaching adult sunday school, got a 7 mos pregnant wife (and those other two kids, both under 5), football is back in season, and I'm travelling quite a bit. Geez, time? Does it really matter? Heh.
