Feds Force Stone to Drop "Russian" from Label
Industry News by SASSY
Changes in the name of Stone Brewing's yearly released Imperial Russian Stout may cause confusion among consumers on the lookout for the sixth-ranked beer on BeerPal.com. The Tax and Trade Bureau insisted that the word "Russian" be removed, claiming the label misleads the public into thinking the beer is from a Russian brewery. Stone Brewing Company in San Marcos, CA, assures beer lovers that aside from the name and the addition of more roasted barley, the Imperial Stout, released June 27th, is still the same beer. The brewery plans to challenge the Tax and Trade Bureau's decision, offering that the imperial Russian stout is a valid beer style, with characteristics not present in other stouts. http://stonebrew.com/irs/2005/pr.html

Notice the new poll on the subject. (bottom of the home page)
FYI - Here's my email to Stone and their response concerning their recent dispute with the TTB. Quoted without permission, but hopefully with their understanding, so that Beerpals will be among the first to hear the good news. Cheers to Stone.

I read about your debacle with the feds and your Russian Imperial Stout label. Good luck and I'm certain you will prevail ultimately. Cheers, Brett (from Stone-less Oklahoma) http://www.beerpal.com/brain/pollresults.asp Brett, thanks for the email. We never get tired of hearing from the people out there that are passionate enough about our beers that they take the time to write and tell us how they feel. I’m glad you saw the vBlog about the labeling guidelines for the Stone Imperial (Russian) Stout. We will be updating that in the next few days with some exciting news...I won the battle! I received a letter from the Chief of Regulations and Procedures from the ATF/TTB yesterday stating that they will no longer deny the word “Russian” when associated with malt beverages brewed in the United States!! Needless to say, I’m thrilled with the outcome of my three + year battle. We really appreciate the support and keep on spreading the words of Stone and the Arrogance!
