General Beer Discussion by AABREWER318

so..really....would you still drink beer if it had no alcohol?

Absolutely depends on taste. As a rule most alcohol-free beers are not very good. But mostly I enjoy that malt, hops and yeast taste. Somehow I never think while drinking beer about how many % it has. Till I get totally [B)] (but it happens very rare). Very philosophic question anyway.

I never cared about the alcohol, so as long as the taste is the same, sure! Maybe I'd drink even more?

I don't think it would really be beer without some alcohol. Now will I pick one beer over another based on alcohol content? Occasionally I will. As far as NA beers go all I've had was Busch NA with was terrible (just like its close cousins). But i've had some 3.2 Boulevards (just sounds strange, doesn't it?) that were quite similar to the orginals. In short, I would, but not as often. And not as many in a 'session'.

I'd drink it just the same... (now for the paradox) IF IT HAD THE SAME FLAVOR. The problem is, the alcohol actually contributes to the flavor of beer, which is why all the NA's are garbage (I've tried a few in hopes of getting good beer without the alcohol). Incidentally, I couldn't finish my woodchuck cider I got and tried (for the heck of it). It tasted just like "soft" apple cider and because the alcohol wasn't contributing anything... I ditched most of it. If I want cider, I can buy cider (I don't drink beer for its alcoholic effects). If I want alcohol free beer... it just ceases to be beer, though.

The alcahol is part of the taste,If there was a way to make it taste the same,Yea,I would drink it.BUT! I like that warm fuzz buzzy feeling all the way down to the stomach and up to the head [:)]

Most definitely! For me, it's all about the taste, not the alcohol. The caveat is, as others have already pointed out, that the alcohol is integral to the taste. Given that I'm a self-described lightweight (not much alcohol tolerance, I'm afraid), if the taste was the same and no alcohol present, I'd not only still enjoy beer, but I'd probably be able to enjoy more beer! well forget non-alcohol beer----blech![xx(] Yeah- totally philosophically---if it all tasted the same. For me< I'm kinda in the middle. I mean beer has so many complex and different flavors but yes it is the alcohol that carries it all in taste and in mind too. Its the whole relaxing thing about drinking a beer....same as coffee, as it gives a buzz. (and no! i dont ever drink decaf-whats the point). But beer tastes better than coffee lets get real. Of course I never drink beer as beverage (like gulping it to quench thirst so it hard to gauge). But in the alcohol-absence-case, i think i would find myself drinking full-bodied stouts like i would rich coffee or a milkshake[:p]. I dont think i'd enjoy my favorite hoppy IPA's as the alcohol couldn't carry all that bitterness, i think it would just be weird.

I answered this one last weekend quite by accident. I grabbed at a German Beer I'd never seen before thinking I'd try it out. Girl even ID'd me...Wasn't till I was putting it away when I got home that I saw the .5 alc. Stuffed it into the cupboard and it'll probably sit there for the next ten years before I finally dump it out.
