ranking guinness

General Beer Discussion by AABREWER318

I just noticed that guinness is the top rated dry stout...and at no. 13 overall. Now most people seem to say that they just like it alright and i did read some "nays" on guinness in a previous thread.......so why so high? There's no better dry stout? Is it just the brand name? popularity? the extra .2% alcohol??...........and WHY in the regular bottle!?... I dont get this.......you know guinness is best drank on draught or even those draught cans or bottles. I do like guinness by the way.

In Reply To #9 It certainly tastes better in Dublin, but I have yet to discern if this is an allusion created by atmosphere, or if is due to freshness and better kept taps and lines. It is probably a little of both.

In Reply To #7 Wow that's actually pretty darn logical Flash......also i find it interesting that, if i'm not mistaken, there are 3 different types of guinness draught stout reviewed....bottle, can, and from the tap........."my goodness, my guinness"

I love the Guinness Extra Stout, whereas I find the imported draught to be light bodied to a fault and watery. As for the extra stout, I drink it very often... my most casual beer next to Samuel Adams.

In Reply To #7 I have had Guiness in Irland, and it's about as good as you can get for a stout. Might have something to do with the atmosphere, it's really good over there.

In Reply To #17 Well if you're in Dublin, you might as well. Be sure to tell us about the other brews you come across that don't get the disribution. Have fun!

In Reply To #17 Don't forget to use the beer compass! I entered some reviews for the pubs that I go to when I'm there. It is one of the greatest cities in the world - have a good time!

In Reply To #17 Guinness draft is the same in Dublin as it is any place else.I have drank all over the isle, St. James Gate included, and have to say, the best I ever had was in London!!!!! Try to get down to Biddy Early's in the Ring of Kerry. It is the only brew pub in the area, and worth the trip. You can get Guinness there as well. Make sure you hit the mummies at St. Michan's, you'll need a Guinness after that. In the UK you see folks in black and yellow going into pubs, from Guinness "vans". In "Europe" outside of Ireland, it does not exist. This message was edited by Brad Pear at 4/30/2005 1:07:23 PM.

In Reply To #19 I've had it in London as well, it was pretty good. But extra stout is still better. And I have to say Guinness in general is still nothing special IMO. But, like I said, you'll be Dublin, live it up! I'm jealous...

Its all in how the tap is set up....it should be maintained at just the right temperature and pressure for the 'optimal guinness'....i think in Europe they just pay more attention to that stuff.....a lot of times here in the US, if the beer comes out that's good enough........I've heard there's actually Guinness guys who go around to pubs to set the taps up just right.......I find it tastes best out of the bottle or can here in the US.....the bars it doesnt seem as fresh
