New Planet Beer is located in Boulder, Colorado and was founded by Pedro Gonzalez who was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2003. Pedro’s wife, Seneca Murley, also become committed to a gluten-free lifestyle as she watched Pedro’s transformation from chronic fatigue, weight loss and joint pain to a vibrant and healthy lifestyle. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disorder with symptoms triggered by gluten, the protein in grains like wheat, barley and rye, which are typically found in beer. “For me the best news was also the most difficult news. Finding out that I had Celiac Disease answered so many questions and provided instant relief.” said Pedro. “But the road to recovery was hard. You would be amazed how many products contain gluten. I ended up with a very restricted diet, but after a period of time, new gluten-free products started hitting the market. As a natural progression I started drinking gluten-free beer and so my desire to make a tasty gluten-free beer arose,” continued Pedro. In 2008 Pedro was talking with his friend Roy Emmons, who is a master brewer, about how one would make a gluten-free / wheat-free beer. Roy said at the time, “Hey I can make one for you. Let me give it a try.” So the next year Roy developed many different gluten-free beer recipes at his farm in Berthoud. Pedro tasted many of them and finally, after numerous beers poured down the drain; Pedro found one he really liked. This recipe debuted at Seneca’s 40th birthday party and received rave reviews, which triggered Pedro and Seneca to launch New Planet Beer with Tread Lightly Ale hitting the shelves of Boulder County liquor stores and restaurants in September of 2009.
