The oldest and largest Eugene brewery was built in 1866 at Ninth and Olive by Lewis Burns. He ran his Eugene City Brewery for seven years, then sold it to August Werner and Henry Hagerman in 1873. The final owner of the original Lewis Burns brewery was Henry Weinhard, the Portland brew king, who purchased it in 1890. Not long after he bought the Ninth Avenue brewery, Henry shut down its beer-making operation. Thereafter the big barn with the twin smokestacks was known as Weinhard's Beer and Ice Depot. Only the ice was produced locally. Henry's beer, in bottles and kegs, was shipped from his Portland brewery. In 1914 the old brewery building was sold and torn down. The current building was formerly the home of a toy store, a computer store, and eventually opened as the West Brother's BBQ restaurant which added a brewery in 1996. It was then called The Dive Bar for a short time before the location was rehabilitated and returned to its roots in 2004 when Rogue purchased it and renamed it the Eugene City Brewery. The new Eugene City Brewery is an Artisan Varietal Brewery founded in October of 2004, creating world class Track Town Ales in a 7 barrel brew system. Track Town Ales have 40 national and international awards for taste and quality. About the Brewer: After spending the last 22 years studying and working in the field of microbiology, Nate Sampson realized his true passion in this world; brewing. Nate started home brewing in 1992 and became the President of the Cascade Brewers Society in Eugene. The society meets once a month in the Tiki room at the Eugene City Brewery and now Nate has become the brewer of his home brewing stomping grounds. In his previous life Nate was a sponsored amateur skateboarder and a semi-professional pilot. Nate’s best friend in the entire world is his daughter Rhiannon.
