The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Passed by this release for years, finally pulled the trigger this go around. Nice dark amber brown body with a pencil thin head and spotty lacing. Rich and fruity with a good malt to hop balance. Mild bitterness, great floral hop flavors and aroma. Sweet caramel, bread and mild roasted nuts with a chocolate undertone. Really well done, but nothing stood out as amazing.....at it's high cost per bottle I will not be revisiting. Don't see this cellaring very well past 1-2 years either.

Off the tap at the Troegs taproom... drawn deep brown with an opaque quality and a thin head. Lacing is off the chain. Citrus and hop aroma with toffee - interesting. The aroma translates to the flavors yielding a more hoppy barleywine than that which I am used to, but it was damn good.

Maybe it was the surroundings and the other brews i had before this, but i just didn't get this beer- even surprised to see here, its a barleywine .. . some rum, toffee, and spice all blended up and hatched out of a sick chicken .. . Troegs can do better .. . word

Apr 2009 - I can't believe only 3 ratings on this site. You guys don't know what you're missing. Pour was a beautiful cherry wood brown with a finger and a half worth of head with some decent lacing. Strong malty aroma. The flavor, similar to its brethren, contains a rather large citrus presence which packs a bitter wallop to balance the loads of caramel malt. Iif you like the Amber and the Nugget Nectar and dig barleywines, you can’t miss this one!

Bottle from SL, and man-o, man, I sure am a fan of the Troegs amber series: Hopback, Nugget Nectar, and now the Mouflan. Appearance was a big bold brown with some orange hues. The head was white to off-white peachy, leaving behind good lacing. The aroma was rich full citrus hops, tangerines, oranges, grapefruits, full bodied caramel and chocolate too. The flavor followed suite, a really well balanced, but darned hoppy bwine, featuring everything I love about Troegs amber. The mouthfeel was balanced, full malts, not quite sticky, with a huge hop bite. Great stuff Troegs, and I must thank myself for buying this one. YUM!
