Steenbrugge Blond abbey beer is a blond beer with a warm, full flavour and a fruity, lightly smoked yeast aroma combined with the subtle Bruges ?gruut? blend of herbs and spices. Top-fermentation beer. The secret of Steenbrugge abbey beer is the unique ?gruut? blend of herbs and spices, which gives the beer its delicious flavour. Every town used to have its own beer, each with its own individual character. In Bruges that character was determined by a blend of herbs and spices that brewers were obliged to purchase from the city?s herbs and spices shop, known as the ?Gruuthuse?. In Steenbrugge Blond, this medieval tradition continues. Steenbrugge Blond is fermented with a specific Steenbrugge top-fermenting yeast strain, which provides a smoked, phenolic aroma, together with a discernible fruitiness. Type Blonde Fermentation High fermentation Aroma Hop, slightly fruity and spicy yeast aroma Flavour Fresh, wheat, coriander, peel curacao Color Blonde, EBC 11 Bitterness EBU: 23

Slightly hazy golden yellow with small white foam head. Aroma is bit weak. Taste is decent Belgium blond beer, short aftertaste. Not the best Belgium however.(Velp 201302)

A solid pour produces an almost four-finger thick, pale tan colored head in my 25cl tulip glass. The beer is a bright, copper gold hue that shows a brilliantly clear, and I mean brilliantly clear, rich gold hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of sweet honey-like grain, floral hop and fermentation notes, a touch of melon fruit character, some white grape aromas, a nice floral tart pear note, a touch of grassy grain, a light herbal note that adds some counter-balance.The taste is a bit drier than the aroma might suggest, but does have a light sweetness to it that is accentuated by floral nectar and fruity notes. Flavors of pear, ripe honeydew melon, and a touch of herbal floral nectar notes up front are balanced by a biting bitterness and a peppery carbonic bite in the finish. This beer is pretty light bodied, even the palate presence fades pretty quickly, it does have just enough body to keep from being watery though. The malt contributes a touch of grassy grain, perhaps some cracker-like notes as well as a touch of honey-like malt.
I can certainly be a sucker for these lower gravity Belgian type beers, but this one just doesn't really do it for me. It is lacking that complexity and depth of flavor that the best of the type achieve. Not bad, even worth trying, but not great.

330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 6.5%. Golden colour, huge white head. The aroma is herbal, citrussy and moderately spicy, nice. The flavour is fairly sweet and fruity, notes of citrus, yeast and some spice. Minimal bitterness.
