A deep ruby red strong ale with an excellent balance of malt sweetness and hop bitterness. A classic example of a ‘winter warmer’; high in alcohol and rich in taste.

The beer pours a brownish-black with a thin light brown head that quickly reduces to a ring. The aroma is roasted malt, molasses, and some hops. The mouthfeel is full-bodied, creamy, and low in carbonation. The flavour is roasted malt, bitter coffee, and a little molasses.

Pours a very dark brown with less than a one finger head that quickly disappears. Aroma is malty with a slight sour hint to it. Taste is of dark malts, slight bitterness, and a smidgen of noticeable alcohol. Aftertaste is slightly odd and reminds me of a cooked frozen pizza. Slightly watered down. very slight burning as it goes down. Overall drinkable but it isn't something I would stock up on.

Pours a dark brown colour with a foamy bubbly beige head. Has roasted malts aroma with a hint of chocolate. Nice dirty lacing. Medium retention. Flavours of chocolate, caramel, roasted malts. pretty creamy mouthfeel. Good average carbonation. Pretty good.

Dark brown, if not black with light brown small foam head. Aroma is toffee and bit chocolate. Taste is nice bitter with toffee, coffee and a little chocolate. Nice dry bitter aftertaste. (Velp 201211)

Dark brown with ruby highlights. No head retention or lacing.Maybe had this too long. Things pick up with the aroma and the flavour.Sweet roasted malts, dark chocolate, black coffee.Medium mouth feel.Think it needs a tad of carbonation. Not too bad.We see we try.

says ruby red, but looks like a porter to me. nice rich, malty aroma. a little chocolate, coffee, a touch of hops. similar flavor. smooth feel. now i remember why i really dig their porter and stout. definite house flavor, but it's a good one.

500 ml bottle. Poured a hazy deep brown with reddish tones colored ale with a one finger tan creamy foamy head that had a superb retention. Active carbonation. Good lacing. The aroma is sweet toasted malts, sour ripe fruits, plums, raisins, cherries. The flavour is sweet roasted malts, dark chocolate, toffee, burned coffee beans, molasses. The mouthfeel is first creamy and then very smooth. This medium bodied ale has a quite short hoppy bitter finish. A very pleasant and fine Winter brew.

I may have a dud based on some other reviews. A strong pour produces no head/carbonation of any kind, basically flat. Doesn't smell like other winter ales, fruity, somewhat sweet. The flavour is nutty, roasted coffee, not at all what I would expect from a winter but the flavour is good. There is a small amount of carbonation in the mouth. Smooth mouthfeel goes down smooth with no sign of the 6.5%abv. Gonna have to try another one of these and see if it's the same.

I have always found St. Peter's Ales to be hit and miss, and for me, this one is a miss. I expect a more robustness from an ale that describes itself as a 'Winter' Ale. A dark beer that presents itself as a glass of nutty liquid malt. No extra spices...no warming alcohol scent.

Poured out a large tan cap that sticks around for a while and leaves an absolutely filthy glass. Very dark brown brew. Nice attentive aroma that makes my mouth water: initial spices, dark fruits with some citrus notes that give way to cocoa, cherries, maybe berries, mild caramel, brown sugar and a slight smoke or peaty smell. The taste is nearly as good except for the odd lingering finish. Ample roasted malts that are just another face in the crowd of tastes here - molasses, mouthwatering spice and tartness up front, a good burnt quality, weak fruit (leaning to cherry) and a very earthy, peaty finish. Just over medium bodied with a bit of an oily character. Nice chewy aftertaste that never seems to leave the vicinity. Damn fine brew!
