Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special strong ales using the first runnings of the mash. These bees, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It's conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley & hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare elixir ignites your spirit for another trip around the sun.

Bottled@Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Amber colour, not much head. Aroma is fruity, wooden and mildly of alcohol. A quite mild flavour for being a barley wine though. Flavour is quite much sweet fruity and nectary notes along with alcoohol and some bittering hops. Also quite big on the malty side. Very wellbalanced and pleasant.

Rusty red pour. Small dense head sticks around till the end, slick lacing. Fruity, sweet malt aroma.Flavour of caramel malt, dark fruit, balanced well with a hop bitterness. Smooth, medium bodied.Tasty stuff as usual from Southern Tier.

my favorite newbie of the night. nice malty, caramel tofee aroma. hops are there, but take a back seat (in the flavor as well). this is just a really nice sipper, more english leaning than american in style. very smooth.

From Central City. Clear amber body and a creamy tan head. Aroma was understated, just some malt. Taste us supurb, loverly hop and malt balance - lots of malt yet not overly sweet. High ABV is evident, too. Mouthfeel was really good, rich and smooth.

A deep amber colored beer. A big frizzy textured, white head rises above. Has a fair amount of hang time. Eventually settles into a thick soapy ringlet. The nose is sugar and some malt. The body is thick and really smooth going down. There is some warming from the alcohol. The tasting matches the nose, sugar, toffee. Not the most complex barleywine, but definitely among the most drinkable.

650 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10.0%. Copper coloured beer, big to moderate off-white head. Lovely aroma of fruity and piney American hops, some sweetish malty notes too, but not too much. Rich flavour of copious amounts of American hops and sweet malts, nicely balanced. Some vinous notes, also resin, caramel, oak and dark dried fruits. Definitely one of the better barleywines I’ve had.

Aroma is strong and fruity, more like a hard cider, with tones of apple and malt along with hints of brown sugar, grapefruit and honey. It pours a lovely transparent mahogany with a decent pale cinnamon head. Flavor is fruity, mainly apple; malty, slightly woody, slightly sweet, with hints of caramel and grapefruit - and a fair alcohol nip that lets you know it is a barleywine. Texture is smooth yet edgy and leaves behind a nice, slightly tinny fizz. I believe barleywine fans will like this one.

Pours a ruby copper with a thin white head. Sweet malt aroma. Mouthfeel is dry. Flavor is hops and sweet malt with a dry dry but sticky sweet finish. Oddly interesting.

Very nice beer from Southern Tier. 10% ABV somewhat subdued until the last half of my mug. Nice medium brown color, very much an English Barley Wine vs. an American Barley Wine. Not hoppy, sweet, malty, enjoyed very much. Recommended

WOW! Damn good beer. ST never dissapoints me, no matter what they put out. Colour is a beautiful ruby red-slight mahogay colour. Sweet, big ass vanilla coloured head. Aroma is enticing with its caramel, carrot cake, cinnamon and berry scent. All sorts of flavours. a little hotness initially, but its expected at 10%. Even a little biscuity near the finish. Apples and a little ginger. Another winner from Southern Tier.
