Stony Man is brewed using traditional English techniques for stouts with oatmeal for smoothness and creaminess. The result is an easy-drinking stout that is a little less bitter than most stouts. Stony Man is a famous landmark along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park.

Had a sample of this at Jack Quinn's Irish Pub, in Norfolk, VA.

I was "warned" that this was a Chocolate Stout -- warnings which I gaffed off. After all, I can (and have!) had Imperial Stouts for breakfast; what's a Chocolate Stout going to do to me? Well, in retrospect, I would say that this isn't a "chocolate stout", but a CHOCOLATE STOUT. Please allow me to explain.

Huge Hershey Bar chocolate-ness through and through. In fact, I detect pretty much nothing but chocolate. Massive sweetness, gigantic chocolate -- and not much else. In fact, the ~6-oz sample that I got was more than enough to try this, and to quickly get tired of this. Couldn't imagine getting a full pint of this carbonated Nestle Quick-like beer.

Probably pretty awesome if you made a syrup out of this, and poured it over ice cream. But as a more routine draught beer, I so couldn't bothered by this ever again.

Top of the line at Shenandoah and one of my favorite oatmeal stouts. Filter coffee color, smooth and creamy body, malty sweet and smooth taste balanced by roasty burnt coffee-like bitterness. Even better: oak barrel conditioned version (see that review).
