For the past 15 years, Joe has been brewing his Russian Imperial Stout. This malt-forward ale has a rich complexity, with roasty and chocolate notes, yet enough hop bitterness to balance out the sweetness. This satisfying winter brew is full-bodied with an enjoyable velvety smoothness.

Reviewed in 2012. Strong, smoky aroma has subtle molasses, roast coffee and horehound notes and a hint of burnt wood. It pours a rich sable a mere whisker above black with a thick, fine-bubbled, persistent tan head that leaves generous lacing. Mouth-filling flavor is a little sweet and has notes of roast quality coffee, molasses, caramel and licorice plus a hint of anchovies. The last part actually seems to add to the flavor instead of subtracting from it. Thick, smooth, oily texture has a decent amount of fizz. Attention Boston Beer Company: Hire Joe Formanek - he knows how to brew some a** kicking beer!

Its an imperial stout with all expected requisite qualities in a well balanced proportion. Mayne slightly better than average, but nothing worthy of distinct praise.

It pours dark brown/black with a half inch brown head. Head retention and lacing are both good. The brew smells like roasted malt, licorice, and bittersweet chocolate. Flavors of dark fruit, licorice, roasted malt, and some molasses. Mouthfeel is medium, it's a bit creamy and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. Overall I think this is an ok brew but not great.

A good middle of the road IMPY. Pretty solid in all aspects, yet nothing stands out with the WOW factor. Mostly about the chocolate here, some roastiness with a little hops to balance it out. Dark black appearance with super mocha colored head (what little there is of it). On the lighter side for this style. Not something I'd really seek out on it's own, but a decent mix for the longshot variety bundles.

Pours a deep brown black .. low foam, medium coca lacing .. . booze is quite apparent .. . tar and burnt coffee .. . weak mouth with a bit of burn .. oh come on now, this could be better- tastes like a homebrewed stout that is too young still .. . . jan, cut the crap!
