Visiting the Rochester area, I've kind of taken a liking to trying the Rohrbach Brewing Company products. Last night, my wife and our friends stopped by the Rohrbach brewery to chat it up over some brews. One of the beers that caught my interest was the Belgian Dubbel. Anytime a brewery offers a belgian-style craft brew, I almost always try it out. This night was no different.

The first thing that I thought was odd was that this beer came out to the table in a pint glass. I'm not sure I've ever been served a belgian-style dubbel in a pint glass, but I was willing to overlook it considering dubbels usually come out in 12oz glasses.

The beer had a solid brown color to it with some red highlights around the edge of the glass when held up to the light. The head was non-existent which I was a little disappointed with. Must have been the way the bartender was pouring beer, as my other beer on this evening had a very small head on it. The aroma was of your typical of most dubbels where you could smell malts, alcohol, and dark fruits. Nothing mind blowing though.

The flavors followed up on the aroma and were solid, but not mind blowing. My tongue picked up on some roasted caramel malts and light alcoholic flavors. I really didn't pick up much on the dark fruityness that I smelt in the aroma. The beer drank well and was on the smooth side.

Overall, I wasn't very impressed by the Rohrbach attempt at a Belgian-style dubbel, but I'm not going to be too hard on them. This might be their first attempt at anything Belgian-style and although it is a step in the right direction. I just think this one needs a little bit more substance to it. I'll have to try it again next time I visit and see if the next batch is any better.
