As Game of Thrones approaches its final season, Brewery Ommegang and HBO Global Licensing are excited to announce the launch of the Royal Reserve Collection, a collectible series of four special, limited release beers, each designed and brewed as an homage to one of four epic figures in the battle for the Seven Kingdoms. Packaged as a series, with simple, elegant iconography and sophisticated design representative of select Westerosi houses, each beer will be brewed and blended with ingredients selected to match the character and temperament of the chosen hero, designed and brewed as Brewery Ommegang’s interpretation of what a royal brewer might brew for his or her noble master. The first beer in the series is Hand of the Queen, a beer brewed for Tyrion Lannister. As one who knows a great many things, Tyrion knows and loves wine above all else, so Hand of the Queen is a big, bold barleywine, a beer fit for those who seek knowledge and truth, both great and small.

Pours clear sepia with a thick and persistent buff head. Aroma gives up toasted malt, caramel and alcohol tones. Flavor presents a strong alcohol bite accompanied by caramel, toasted malt, and subtle dark fruit and pomme touches. Texture delivers fair body and jazzy fizz. Are you worthy to be the Hand of the Queen?

Thanks to PaleAleRider for the share. Deep amber colour with purple highlights, a frothy mocha-coloured head, creamy lacing and particles everywhere. Sweet malt aromas with burnt ones that gives hints of smokiness, with nicely blended dark fruits. Smooth silky mouthfeel with a nice bitter finish. Dark fruit taste with some good hops. Seems to get more and more bitter, dry as it goes. A very nice and smooth barleywine with more hoppiness for the style.

Picked up this bottle at Craft Beer Cellar in Waterbury, VT in April '18. Pours a huge foamy off-white head that dissipates to a good size coating. Has an amber appearance with ruby highlights and visible sediment. Lacing is minimal but sticky. Aromas of resin, dry fruit, subtle caramel hints, herbal and light spices. Flavours of dried fruits (raisins, plums), herbal and spices notes, a little bit of caramel. Very smooth and slightly drying mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden, a bit dangerous as it's so easy going down. Good stuff!
