The Belgian Scotch brewing connection dates to World War I when thousands of Scots spent years in Belgium. To satisfy their new customers, brewers learned to brew Scotch style ales, and the style became a new and significant part of the Belgian brewing tradition. This fine ale uses heather tips and a wee bit of smoked malt to bring the taste and aroma of Scotland to the forefront.

a cool belgian style scotch ale that hit the spot when in the mood for a malty winter brew. fruity esters present in the aroma and flavor from the yeast, but just a hint of spicy, so more scotch ale than belgian, which suited me just fine. expertly balanced and robust and flavorful for a 6 1/2 percent beer. well done. another i'd get a lot if it were cheaper.

A deep mahogany colored beer with a big frothy textured, off white head rising above. Some hang time. But a disappointingly thin ringlet is all that is left. The body is full and smooth. A well carbonated ale. Gentle yeasty aroma. I get a gig apple taste, mixed with some spice, roasted malt and yeast. Really well balanced and like the others I’ve tried from this New York brewery, I like it.

Aroma is strong, fruity and yeasty with a malty hint and some earthy undertones, mainly peat. It pours a beautiful clear mahogany with a golden glint and a rather thick, persistent, fluffy cream-white head that leaves behind some good lacing. Flavor is rather like a good barleywine but without a fierce alcohol bite. It is fruity and earthy with touches of caramel, malt and even licorice. Texture is quite smooth and fairly tingly. This one is worth seeking.

    750ml bottle -

Aroma - lots of peat, nutty, nice touch of spices...woody/earth with a suprising black licorice note

    Appearance - dark brown/amber body with a dense, 2" tan head...long lasting...beautiful.

Taste - caramel malts hit me right up front backed by some nice smoke, herbal hops, and subtle chocolate. Very clean flavors.

Palate - full bodied, smooth with just a bit of carbonation bite. Very nice finish.

Oveall - Another great beer from Ommegang. This was an easy beer for me to enjoy, but to also show a few others and introduce them to Ommegang.

Pours brown with a fluffy head. Lacing is neverending. Aroma of scotch. Mouthfeel is smooth as silk with hints of alcohol. Flavor is of scotch and earthy spice. All in all a Scotch Ale with a Belgian twist. Nice!

The label caught my eye, " Traditional Belgian style Scotch ale" never had one of those before, two styles i like, together. Well they didnt blend as well as i had hoped, I am not a fan of peat in beer, scotch maybe, anyway smoked peat is the main attraction in the aroma and flavor. A nice deep brown body and a decent head that faded quickly, mouthfeel was full and it had a dry finish. Overall the peat ruined it for me, but if you like peat and heather tips this might be for you.
