Two of Canada’s biggest beverage makers are collaborating on a new beer they say defies style. Molson Coors Beverage Company and J.P. Wiser’s Whisky teamed up to create Molson Common Bond, an amber lager featuring whisky-aged hops that impart complex flavors. The new beer is now available across Canada for a limited time. The collaboration is the first of its kind for the two Canadian beverage pioneers, which are among the oldest in the nation. Molson Coors traces its founding to 1786, while J.P. Wiser’s was established in 1857. With Common Bond, they celebrate a shared appreciation for craftsmanship while admittedly testing the limits of style. “We’ve created something quite unique for the marketplace,” says Andy Preston, senior beverage development specialist for Molson Coors, of the 6.1% alcohol-by-volume lager. “We wanted to something special that had never been done.”

Fairly clean golden-amber colour with a nice creamy, slightly-warm-beige head, good stay and leaving decent lacing. The nose is kind of rich with sweetness from the caramel malt, oak wood and vanilla. There seems to be decent hops cutting some of the sweetness. Light syrup still coats the mouth a little. Some alright grain scent do come out. Probably better real cold to cut most of this, but not bad all-around for an oaked lager.

The beer pours a translucent light copper colour with a creamy tan coloured head and plenty of effervesecnec. The aroma is caramel, rye, grass, and alcohol (is there a reason that the stronger a Molson product gets, the less likely you are to smell any hops?). The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The predominant flavours are caramel and whiskey. The alcohol is definitely noticeable. Interesting, and not as bad as I thought it would be.
