There is a widespread perception that Stout is an Irish drink, and it is true that the Irish have made it their own. The fact remains that like India Pale Ale and Porter (from which it descends) its roots are very much in London. Stout grew out of Porter as the latter got weaker over time, as a ‘stout’ beer was a stronger version of another style. As brewing techniques developed, especially with the use of black malt after 1817, stouts became the pitch black beers we see today. London water and Dublin water were both excellent for stouts though would have made the Dublin beers dryer, a fact exacerbated by the decision of the Irish brewers to add cheaper roast barley to the brew, something London brewers did not do. Meantime’s Single London Stout is very much an old London beer as it would be made today.

Looks really nice with it's coffeelike dark brown color. Top is not very huge, but is nicely white. Aroma has strong coffe and caramel in it. Taste is smooth and round and then the coffee starts to come out in the aftertaste. Really an good surprise especially when it comes to the aftertaste.

Dark ruby red/black colour, mediumsizwed beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, slight dark fruit and earth. Flavour is roasted malts, slight fruityness and some wooden and grassy hints also around.
