PAPERMAKER PILSNER (Czech Pilsner) Beer drinkers rejoice and sip slow on this medium bodied, brilliantly clear, Pilsner. It is well rounded with a distinct bitterness that stays on the pallet just long enough. This beer is injected with richness from spicy flavours traced back to the Saaz hops. THE HISTORY BEHIND THE NAME PAPERMAKER PILSNER PLAYS TRIBUTE TO KENORA’S PAPER MAKING HISTORY. With lumber companies such as Keewatin Lumber and Rat Portage Lumber, from birth, Kenora has been known as a timber town…but the real passion and profit has always been in paper making. Over the years the local paper mill had seen many leaders; but was originally built in 1922 under the ownership of an America industrialist named Edward W. Backus. By 1929 the mill’s capacity had grown significantly, yielding 200 tons of paper a day. Experiencing a post war boom the Minnesota-Ontario Paper Company merged with Boise Cascade in 1965. In 1978 the mill was rebranded Boise Cascade Canada Ltd. Keeping up with demand and modern technology of the 1980’s, the mill was completely overhauled at a cost of $160 Million. By 1993 ownership had changed yet again and it was taken over by Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. who also owned and operated mills in Fort Frances and Tacoma. By the early 2000s, due to decreased demand and increased operational costs, the mill was forced to slow, and in December of 2005 after operating for 82 years, sadly had to stop the presses and shut its doors for good.
