I’ve read that this was originally created by being a failed attempt at something else. Makes me wonder what that something else was because this isn’t a top notch barleywine. The beer is a nice murky copper color, capped off by a thin creamy cream colored head. Aroma is sweet malt, brown sugar, vanilla, and molasses. Mouthfeel is average. Flavor is sweet malt, and lots of it. Not much in the way of yeast or hops in the flavor here.

A copper color with a tan head. Aroma contains citrus, pine, perfume, and dark fruit. The flavor is bitter with a good malt presence. Some citrus and caramel notes. Alcohol is cover up well but comes through in the finish some. Overall a good beer.

Pour a dark orange with a small off-white head with heavy amount of lacing. The aroma is of citrus hops and caramel malts. Aroma is fairly sweet. The taste is sweet with lots of caramel malts and brown sugar. Good amount of citrus and pine in the finish. The mouth feel is full bodied with medium carbonation. Very smooth creamy mouth feel.

WHOA! I picked this beer up from the Wine Gourmet in Roanoke, VA. This beer is SCARY. First, you don't know this is a 9+% beer and it is exceptionally easy drinking. This beer might be my new favorite American Barleywine - eclipsing Bigfoot Ale. It smells boozy but it doen't taste it. This is winter warmer hop goodnees. GOLDEN. I love it.

This is quite a departure from my normal experience with Lagunitas in that this beer isn't all about the hops. The brown sugar, caramel and roasted malt notes take the stage while the ample hop presence stays in the background but keeps the beer from becoming overly sweet.

New to Knoxville, finally. Translucent amber pour, short light head, not much lacing. Sweet caramel malty aroma, subtle hops, very light booze. Warmingly sweet caramel and toffee flavor, earthy hops to offset. Very warming.

I bought this thinking it was a brown ale......and the pour is brown. The aroma is caramel malt, sugar, and plums. The flavour is sweet malt, butterscotch, and vanilla. In the end, just as good as any brown ale.

2004 Vintage, Bottle, City Beer Store. Ok, so, this isn't how the beer normally tastes, but I enjoyed it and I'll go back for a normal review sometime. There was no real hop aroma or flavor at this point. The beer is pretty much a sweet malt bomb. It actually reminded me of a doppelbock to some extent. There's a big sugary caramel flavor that dominates. The beer has taken on some light sherry notes. The body is beginning to thin out but it seems to be holding up against time better than the gnarleywine, oddly. The caramel malt and brown sugar sweetness aren't quite as overpowering or simplistic as you might expect. The flavor is round and full without being cloying. Very nice.

Pours a beautiful clear dark reddish amber with a yellowish-tan fine-bubbled head. Aroma is hoppy and has a citrus undertone. Mouth-filling hoppy flavor has a firm hint of citrus, mainly lemon and orange, and is not too bitter. Texture is rough, lively and fizzy.
