Aloha Altbier Deep mahogany in color with an assertive hop flavor and aroma balanced by a robust roasted malt character, this beer looks darker than it tastes, finishing with a crisp, dry flavor. It was brewed as a traditional Dusseldorf-style altbier and fermented with an altbier yeast strain.

When I was working in Hawaii recently, I took a day-trip to The Big Island, to see the sites, and stop into the Kona Brewing Company brewpub. It was there that I had a great afternoon, and where the bar-tender was making sure that I was given healthy samples of each and every beer they had on tap -- and several not even listed as being available on their "What's On Tap" list.... :) Sometimes it pays to be a homebrewer and a BA, eh...?

Got a sizable sample of their newest offering -- Aloha Altbier. And while I'm all for stretching one's wings a bit and attempting new styles, this wasn't quite up to snuff, IMHO.

After tasting this, I immediately wished it was a bit sharper and a bit more bitter. In other words, this seems to come across as more of a standard American Amber Ale, than any sort of a quasi-cold-conditioned German (Amber) Ale.

Granted, this is indeed a nicely drinkable Amber Ale -- but doesn't really win points in my mind as an Alt. That unto itself isn't a deal-breaker per se, but I think they could have done such a bigger/better job with this one. Too many better offerings on tap to really want to go for a pint of this, IMO.
