When we opened in 1989, the most adventurous beer in town was our Downtown After Dark Brown Ale. Our 22nd Anniversary Stout is a tribute to our roots and to those that dared to dream big in San Diego. Brewed with vanilla beans and aged three months in American oak bourbon barrels, this complex Imperial Stout has layers. Nuances of dark chocolate and espresso flavors are underpinned by hints of vanilla, bourbon, and oak. Save a bottle. Like us, this Special Release gets better with age.

Within the style and substyle, not a standout, but I'm a sucker for it all - vanilla, bourbon, impy stouts. so while this is not elite in that field by any stretch, it was still really good. light barrel influence, and a hefty dose of vanilla, chocolate, roasted malts, light coffee and raisins, Just a teeny tiny touch thinner than i like, but not to a fault, and it is smooth. One of the few KStrauss beers I'd get multiple times.

Sampled on 12/21/2012. This Imperial Stout pours a medium to dark black color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized off white head, with nice lacing and decent retention. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, vanilla, dark fruits and sweet. A medium to full bodied Imperial Stout. Malts are chocolate and coffee, somewhat sweet. The hops are earthy. Nice balance between the malt, chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Decent carbonation. Very smooth tasting. The vanilla is not too overwhelming and balances the coffee/chocolate/roasty malts nicely. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

up top, you've been 'avin a good time?!? .. Pours a deep brown .. light head, medium lacing .. . lots of sweetness, vanilla, burnt toffee, and moo milk .. . pretty good, not overdone with the vanilla .. . . Old age? You don't leave fingerprints anymore.

Chock full of vanilla, which blends well with the chocolate malt and moderate bourbon barrel influence. Rich and velvety smooth with an airy mouth feel (much like the 1st couple of batches of BA BORIS from Hoppin' Frog). A beautiful beverage to wind down a tasting with.

Holy crap this tastes like bourbon. Bourbon, bourbon, bourbon, and more bourbon. Did I mention that this smells like bourbon? Looks like a great stout, that is, pitch black, but with a lightly colored head. There are hints of vanilla, wood (I guess that's the oak), coffee, and dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is uber-smooth. I will have to send this to some of my beerpals...this is fabulous drinking. I wish I had more of it. As it warms, the vanilla sweetness dies down and the strong bourbon flavor rises in its place. I will have to toss a couple into the closet to collect dust for a while.
