Due to the lower alcohol percentage Jopen Gerstebier has a drinkable character. Nice and refreshing with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Barley beer, top-fermenting beer, was very popular in the nineteenth century. This blond, reasonably bitter beer was widely drunk. The beer was imitated by the bottom-fermenting brewers whose lager was still too expensive for the 'ordinary' man. Unfortunately, the lager won the traditional beer.

330 ml bottle, kindly shared by abemorsten. Hazy pale golden colour, moderate white head. Aroma of solvents, grain and Belgian yeast. Grainy flavour with some fruit, stale jam in the finish. Hardly any bitterness. Not very pleasant.

Hazy golden yellow with lasting white foam head. Aroma is not strong, not well defined. Taste is different, quite fresh. Aftertaste is somewhat greasy. (Velp 201305)

Bottled (from bierzwerg.de). Hazy yellowish golden colour with a small white foamy head that leaves some slight lace. Aroma is wheat, some citrus fruits, mild spices, bread and some mild bitter hops. Flavour is grass, grain, some wheat, mild hayish and cardboardy notes as well as some slight fruits and yeast. Rather strange, but at the same time a quite nice brew.
