Pumpkin beers are all the seasonal rage. But not at the Indigo Imp Brewery in Cleveland. Indigo Imp opted this year to make a seasonal ale with roasted sweet potato and spices. "We don't do anything by the book at our brewery anyway," brewer and owner Matt Chappel said, laughing when asked about the beer called Autumn. (The brewery also uses open fermentation -- an unusual process for a modern American brewery.) Indigo Imp fans kept asking the brewery about a fall seasonal, Chappel said. But he didn't want to make a pumpkin beer since everybody else does one. He settled on sweet potato, which provides a toasted flavor that complements the sweet taste of the nutmeg and cinammon, Chappel said. The beer also is made with Belgian yeast. Autumn will be available on a limited basis in four-packs starting the first week of September at Heinen's grocery stores. It will then be available at other retailers that carry Indigo Imp.

I love everything I've had from II, and this is another great one. Perfect seasonal spiced ale without the overbearing sweet pumpkin flavors of some. I love the aroma of spice, sour, and Belgian yeast, perfect combination. The flavor is intense, spice, sour grapes, dank bread and a good bitterness at the end. This is my new favorite seasonal, showed up on my doorstep Halloween day courtesy of Kinger, couldn't have planned it better!

Glowing burnt sienna colored body, somewhat murky with a half inch head and heavy lacing. Lively, tangy and sweet with a light to medium body. Yams and bakers spices, buttery squash, caramel and some slight roast. Familiar house twang and a nice Belgian yeast accent. Impressive offering, lovely alternative to the pumpkin beers, and very similar to them as well.
