Pop the top on this black beauty and wow you can smell the alcohol. This baby is thick and rich. The taste is very full and complex. I can taste malt more than hops and for me that is a good thing.

Single from the LCBO. Pours a dark brown colour with a little ruby highlights. Nice light brown coloured head, foamy, decent retention, but low lacing. Loads of dark fruits (raisins, plums, prunes) with notes of chocolate, nuts and light alcohol. This last one is well-hidden though in the mouthfeel. Again, lots of dark fruits in the taste with some molasses and hints of burnt malt, caramel and licorice. Lots going here, so if you like dark fruits, you will really like this one.

Small sticker on bottle says 14.5%, and not 16% that's on the actual bottle. Poured a very large amount of mocha coloured head and has a pitch black appearance. The alcohol is immediately apparent in the smell. Has toasty and nutty malt aromas and notes of vanilla and barley. Flavours are dark roasted malts, strong coffee dark roast, sweets, toffee. Alcohol is very much in your face. Very strong and bitter mouthfeel, and has a warming sensation. Almost feels like having whisky. Lively carbonation. For having so many hop and malt varieties, kind of hard to distinguish them all. Has nice flavours but very high abv and it shows.

Extremely thick and heavy, bottle was shared three ways and my share was more than enough. Big malty profile with lots of raisin, fig and caramel. Peaty and boozy. Dark brown pour with a creamy brown head and very nice lacing. Very sweet to the palate and warming to the belly.

The beer pours a solid dark brown, syrupy in nature with a creamy light brown head. Aroma is alcohol, caramel, and molasses. Mouthfeel is full bodied with mild carbonation. Flavour is over the top sweet and the alcohol is definitely noticeable. Dark fruit and roasted malt round out the flavour. Definitely a beer for sharing. -

Wow they have thrown every thing in this beer....This will either be a mess or at least make me a mess. Dark chocolate brown body with a tall brown cap. Aroma is not the mess I was expecting.....Mild burnt sugar, coconut, sweet coffee, almost soya sauce, no hint of the 16%... kind of boring. Taste is so very mild for what this is. Soya sauce, burnt sugar, so very sweet, no trace of the alcohol...how did they do that. This is drinking down to fast. Kind of a simple taste for the whole mess of ingredients that's in here. Why so thin feeling. I really don't mind this beer but its kind of a let down. Kind of want to re-review this on a different night.

A big dark three finger foam comes off the pour, its gone quickly and leaves no lace but there's some spotty lace left behind on the glass. Aromas of molasses, licorice, some over-ripe dark fruits, teriyaki and lots of booze. Flavors are about the same as the aroma but a little tobacco and chocolate syrup show once its warmed up, decent flavors but very boozy.Overall I can see potential in letting this age, but today the booze is wrecking what could be an awesome beer. I still like it but at every point the booze overpowers everything else.

Everything plus the kitchen sink and it definitely could have been a train wreck. Lots of alcohol in the aroma, figs/dates, dark chocolate, and raisins. Flavor is SWEET! Roasted malts, dark chocolate, molasses-like bitterness, brown-sugar mixed with alcohol. Pretty heavy! -

From Central City, in a bomber. Pours dark brown with a medium brown head. Smells like a barleywine, strong malt, molasses and black licorice notes, but surprisingly light on the alcohol. Grand flavour, like the aroma. No alcohol burn, but it does carry a strong punch. Smooth mouth, almost syrupy, maybe a little too sweet at the end. Might have to get another one of these as a keeper.

Strong aroma is malty, woody, a little syrupy. Pours a deep coffee brown with a fairly thick, if not too persistent tan head. Flavor has molasses, roast malt and woody hops notes with more than a hint of miso - and an alcohol bite like an angry pit bull. It is on the sweet side, but not grossly sweet. Texture has very firm, oily, syrupy body, though fizz level leaves a bit to be desired. Whoa, it’s already hit me like a speeding MARTA bus! Finish is lip-smacking, woody, malty, syrupy. A perfect beer to drink on the first day of Hanukkah, even if you’re not Jewish. Well, I have some good friends who are Jewish, and that’s no lie.
