Amber-coloured abbey beer, with a crisp, very full bitter-sweet flavour and a lingering aftertaste. The typically crisp Tripel flavour is caused by the blonde candy sugar and the subtle mixture of mild and bitter hops. The rich flavours obtain their perfect harmony owing to the continued fermentation after bottling.

Little hazy golden blond with huge foam head, sticking to lip and lacing to glass. Nice hoppy aroma with alcohol present. Taste is good triple, bitter with some little sweet, alcohol is there. Nice long bittersweet aftertaste. (VLieland 201209)

Clear golden with a with a low but lasting creamy white foam. Sweet aroma of English marmalade, over-riped banana and peaches. Medium to full-bodied with a clean and sweet flavour of bananas, peaches and sugar. Low bitterness in the finish which is almost cloyingly sweet.

Grimbergen tripel is a clear golden beer with a large fizzling foam collar. It has a distinct fruity banana aroma. It feels very acidic, followed by a sweet sugarish taste combined with a strong sense of alcohol. The aftertaste is sweet/sour and occidant.

Bottled. Golden colour, creamy white mediumsized head. Aroma is acidic fruit and yeast with some caramellish and glueish hints. Flavour is glue, malts, acidic fruit and some yeast. Also alcohol is present.

aroma of yeast, malt, lemon zest, merangue (seems to be a theme), and pepper. Flavors of the lemon zest merangue, biscuits, pepper-- -almost like lemon cake mix. not too shabby.

Very orange in it's coloring; when topped with it's short white head it is a thing of beauty. Sweetly hoppy aroma is balanced well by the smell of some aromatic hops and the strong alcohol lying beneath. The palate starts with a brief bit of chocolate and then what can only be described as a wall of sweetness. This beer is way too sweet in my opinion - anything else interesting is drowned out in the flavor category. The only thing I can compare the level of sweetness to would be an English mead.

This was actually the first Tripel I ever tasted, back when I was first getting my feet wet with sampling Belgian Ales (circa `98?). I had had Chimay (Red) before, and just assumed that all Belgians were dark, heavy, highly alcoholic, and highly undrinkable (yes, I admit it -- I was *very* naive back then!). This Tripel opened up my eyes to the fact that there are many, many different styles of Belgian beer.

Flash-forward a few years, and I'm surprised that this hasn't been reviewed all that often. I don't see it around much anymore, so maybe this is rarer than I first thought? Either way, it was nice coming back to an old forgotten friend with this one: green 750mL corked-n'-caged bottle, with an attractive eagle motiff made to look like stained glass on the label.

Poured this into my Piraat glass, and had a large mass of foam attempting to dominate things. Let that settle, and poured in a little more, and so on, until I was able to at least get enough beer into the glass to reach it's plimsoll line. A lively beer in appearence, that's for sure.

The aroma is also quite attractive, though not as assertive as I normally expect from a Tripel. But still.... it's nice.

For the flavor profile, this beer tends to take things one at a time. Sweet and almost candy-like at first, with a refreshing mellowing in the middle, and a clean and yet warming finish. And to add more complexity to this issue, these various flavor combos tend to wax and wane as the beer's temperature increases. Quite an interesting beer here, me'thinks.

Overall, a beer that tends to reveal itself slowly, with only the last glassful revealing all that it has to offer -- including a bit of a alcholic bite near the end. And while I can't say that this is my favorite Tripel, it's surely one of the better ones out there -- and quite an Unsung Hero, IMO. Recommended.

Ever so slightly hazy golden colour with a huge white head. Aroma is primarily of citrus fruit with underlying malt. Taste is sweet and alcoholic, with strong alcohol in the finish. Carbonated mouthfeel. Overall, a bit disappointing.

Malty aroma with some sour patches, but rather weak (aroma), light even pale yellow color, average head. Flavor: malty-yeasty bitter at the beginning, sweetish later and intense alcohol taste at the end. Very average beer. Far from so nice Gentse Tripel.
