Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch Ale is a tribute to the legendary "Wee Heavy" beers of Scotland. A malty, deep-ruby-hued ale, it features a generous amount of caramel sweetness, a reserved hop profile and a subtle warming character, at 7.7% alcohol by volume. Claymore will be available in six-packs and on draft through mid-April. "We still love hops, but we wanted to brew a more malt-forward beer for a change," says Great Divide founder and president Brian Dunn. "And since it's still winter, it made sense to brew something with a bit of warming alcohol character. Wee Heavy is sort of an underappreciated --not to mention delicious--style, so we decided that it would be the perfect fit. We're excited," he concludes. "It'll stand up to the best of them."

355 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.7%. Very dark brown colour, thin beige head of poor retention. Malty aroma, some caramel and a hint of wood, but a bit anonymous. A faint hint of smoke. Malts, caramel and wood in the medium sweet flavour too, minimal hops. Not a bad beer, but this is not my favourite style.

Pours out a deep dark chocolate brown with a tan head. The aroma is of heavy malt and alchol The mouthfeel is solid and not at all sweet. The taste is rich but not complex and full of malt satisfaction.

A nice wee heavy from great divide though a bit plain for them. A sweet and straight forward scotch ale that lacked the peated notes I was looking for, I am sure its in there but far too subtle. I have come to expect too much from this style due to pfoxyjohn's Wallace Wee Heavy :)

Fizzy pour right from the bottle, thought it may have been a Coke at first. Head immediately vanished and no lacing was left behind. Bottle has less than two months of age on it. Nutty with overtones of chocolate, heavy roast and a nice gritty earthiness. Oily and flat on the palate with a slightly watery finish providing for a light bodied "wee heavy" if you catch my drift. High expectations were severely undercut by this beer. Arcadia's Loch Down blows this away.

Wishlist beer that my sis brought me from a recent trip to Asheville and Bruisin' Ales. Gotta love big sisters... Deep tea brown pour, slight ruby tinge, medium head, heavy lacing throughout. Rich malty aroma, as should be, with a noticeable chocolate nose, medium toasted malts, slight dark fruits, earthy peat and hops. Taste also has the chocolate maltiness, caramel, slight peat, very slight earthy hops. Mostly a big ass malt bomb. MOST excellent beer - thoroughly enjoyed this one.

It pours a very dark brown-red with a thin light-tan head and some surrounding lacing. An aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, nuts, light hops, orange and citrus notes, light raisin, some bitterness and light spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth, thick, and rich. Flavors of roasted malts, chocolate, nuts, hops, orange and citrus, raisins, bitterness and spiciness. Excellent!!

Bottled@Oliver Twist, Stockholm (thanks to the guys from Ölfrämjandet who shared some beers with me). Ambery brown colour, small off-white head. Aroma is leather, toffee, caramel malts, plum and wood along with some fruityness as well. Flavour is quite much the same with the leathery notes being rather dominating. Yet very easy to drink.

Has a rich, thick aroma that is strongly yeasty and a little fruity and malty. It pours a barely translucent light chocolate brown with a pale tan head. Flavor is malty, yeasty and fruity - like thick, unpasteurized apple juice - with just a hint of semi-sweet chocolate. Smooth, rather thick texture had a nice fizz.

Sampled on 11/20/2010. Bottled on May 24, 2010. This Scotch Ale pours a medium to dark brown color with some ruby highlights from a 12oz bottle. Medium to small sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, sweet, and peaty with a touch of smoke. A medium bodied Scotch Ale. The malts are caramel, sweet, and peaty/mossy. The hops are earthy. Nice balance between the malt, caramel and peat. Decent carbonation. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
