There are few styles of beer more flavorful than Imperial Stout. Originating during the heyday of British dark ale production, this beer style's name alludes to its export to the Baltic and Scandinavian countries, and its favor among the Czars. Our Black Cauldron Imperial Stout is named for Yellowstone's Balck Dragon Cauldron, in the Mud Volcano area, where hot water blasts through simmering black mud. This thick, rich ale was brewed with plenty of caramel and roasted malts, and subtly spiced with American Chinook and Willamette hops. It boasts flavors of chocolate and coffee, along with raisins and dried fruit soaked in sherry. We've accentuated the natural smokiness of the brew by adding a small amount of beechwood-smoked malt and aging the brew in an oak whiskey barrel, which also adds notes of oak and vanilla. This is a strong beer, best enjoyed in moderation, and paired with full-flavored grilled meats or chocolate.

"Sounds" thick coming out of the bottle. Pours dark muddy brown head which falls fairly quickly. Dark brown body. Aroma of black pumpernickel bread. Pronounced flavor. Lots of sweetness of caramel, molasses, and brown sugar, rounded off with hops. Rather obscure but there’s an aftertaste of Brazil nuts. (if you’ve had Brazil nuts you know the difference. Definitely ain’t peanuts!!). While there is some thickness to the body, it’s not nearly as thick as something like Bell’s Expedition Stout or Avery Czar. Pretty nice beer!

Pours nearly pure blackness with thin mocha head. The aroma is roasty darkness, burnt molasses, some chocolate, toffee and bread. Nice. The taste begins with chocolate (I love that in the start of the beer’s flavor), burnt molasses and some sweet sugary malts. Those notes are followed by toffee, some coffee, caramel and more malt sweetness. Very nice with full thick bold flavored body. YUM!

Pours a creamy black with a nice chocolate brown head. Aroma is typical of the style. Mouth feel is creamy and goes down smooth. Taste is nothing to write home about, seems a little bland. Aftertaste is a bit metallic with a medium alcohol hint. Not too bad but I have had better, kinda a let down in a way.

Bottled 12/8/2010 with a listed abv of 8.0% and bought in Chicago during the Dark Lord Day 2011 beercation. An opaque dark brown body with a long lasting thick tan head and bountiful lacing. Medium to light mouth feel relative to style, nice creaminess and soothing. Heavy roast with a strong coffee aspect. Nutty with rich bakers chocolate and a very firm bitter kick.

Pour is almost black with a creamy, tan head. Some dark fruit and chocolate, plenty of roasted malts and just a hint of coffee in the aroma. Taste is much the same but the coffee almost completely disappears and there are enough hops to impart a faint, grassy bitterness in the finish. Tasty.

Sampled on 2/5/2010. This Imperial Stout pours a dark black color from a 12oz bottle. Medium sized tan foamy head. The aroma is chocolate, molasses, brown sugar and dark fruit. A medium bodied Imperial Stout. The malts are chocolate and coffee, vanilla and dark fruit. The hops are herbal and earthy. Nice balance of chocolate, sweet and hops. Very smooth. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Very good Impy Stout, dark fruity malt and licorice. This beer pours a deep black-brown with a thin, khaki head. The aroma is a mix of a number of flavors, roast, blackberries, alcohol, anise, caramel, a hint of dark chocolate. No particular note dominates, and everything works pretty well together. The flavor has some sweetness, but it’s fairly dry for the style, always appreciated. Once again, I’m impressed by Grand Teton’s bigger offerings.

Picked up a 4-pack of this beer while at my recent stop at BevMo. They carry most of Grand Teton’s products but this was the first time I’ve seen this particular beer. I cracked the cap that was wrapped up in a gray/silver foil around the top of the bottle. It pours out a motor oil black body with a brown 1/2" thick head. Head retention was pretty low with about 30 seconds or so before melting away, leaving behind some scattered lacing. While still cold, the aroma that first hits me is soy sauce and some light smoke. The dark bitter chocolate really snaps your attention on first taste. The bitter hops just echoes the bitterness in the chocolate. When it warms up, the hops really come out on the nose, blending well with the smoke and soy notes. Leather really comes out when it hits it’s stride. Alcohol is noticeable, but kept well in check. Coffee bitterness also shows up and it finishes rather spicy for a impy. Mouthfeel is a text-book example of how smooth, silky and creamy an impy should be.

wow...i'm surprised at the relatively low scores here. i thought this beer was surprsingly well done. a little on the hoppy side, which was nice, with some decadent roasted chocolate and coffee in the flavor and aroma. dangerously smooth, and easy drinking for an IRS. Only 8%, but full flavored and bodied.
