Inspired by the epic skyline of Chicago, Goose Island’s brewers set out to craft Big John; a tall, bold slugger of a stout that stands out vividly against the little soft beers out there. Epic amounts of roasted malt and an addition of cacao nibs give Big John a massive chocolate flavor and aroma. With a body as substantial and black as the building to which it pays homage, Big John is sure to inspire a sense of awe with every sip.

This produces a pour that is top tier - midnight black with a deep, thick, mahogany head that caps nicely. Damn, it's pretty. Heavy aromas of bitter cocoa and licorice. Heavily flavored with chocolate, cocoa, licorice, molasses, brown sugar, and faint dark fruit notes - cherries and figs. As this is overly sweet it took quite awhile to drink but I really enjoyed this brew.

Bottle, kindly shared by gunnar. ABV 11.5%. Pitch black colour, moderate brown head. Nice roasty aroma, notes of coffee and cocoa, hints of leather. Fairly sweet and malty flavour, strong roasty coffee and cocoa notes. Lovely! Has "much of everything", but is not too extreme. Well balanced.

Pours a deep thick black .. . medium foam .. light lacing .. . tons of tar, with oil and sweet roasty molasses .. . needs a couple of years to be great, i'll revisit .. . . this is outrageous, get me the mayor!

batch from 3/11. pours dark as night pitch black w/eventual thick brown head. aroma is a little roast, chocolate, and lots of dark fruit, licorice. flavor is sweeter than expected, with a bit of alcohol, little hops and the cocoa only really comes out close to room temp. the feel..."this is what an imperial stout should drink like". you can almost chew it...reminds me of Zhukov. when the cocoa comes out the aroma and flavor get even better. still not what i expected but a really nice sipper.

I can't believe I'm the first to rate this beer......it's a very good beer. A nice jet black pour with a creamy brown head. Lots of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt in the aroma. A nice bitter complexity of the coffee and chocolate is balanced out by sweet molasses tones on the tongue.
