http://flyingfish.com/beers/exit_series.html The long-delayed eighth stop on our multi- year trip brings us to, coincidentally, Exit 8 and celebrates what puts the “Garden” in Garden State. To celebrate Exit 8, one of our big farming areas, we’ve brewed a beer that uses a lost local ingredient: chestnuts–and a popular current one: local honey. This full-bodied hybrid Belgian-style brown ale brings forward a nutty character from the chestnuts, accented by the flavors of honey, roasted barley and oat flakes. There’s a nice spiciness from the Mt. Rainier hops while Chinooks add a touch of pine. Fuggles and Columbus round out the hop profile. Exit 8 pairs perfectly with hearty foods like roast pork, sausages or a nice aged gouda. Bottled conditioned, 8.3% abv

Pours an opaque dark-chocolate brown with a thick and rather persistent light tan head. Strong aroma has a malty core and notes of cloves and cinnamon plus a hint of molasses. Rich flavor has malty, molasses, caramel, nutty and earthy notes plus a honey-sweet undertone and hints of cloves and woody hops - or is that chestnut? Thick body is fairly fizzy and leaves a nice tingle with subtle earthy, honey and hoppy tones. Excellent! Be sure to get off at this exit.

I feel bad about not scoring this higher as i think at least some of the fault lies with me for sitting on this for too long. Muddled aroma of bubble gum and clove, with light roasted malts and a touch of nuttiness. Flavor is the same with a touch of bitter and a little sweet in the finish. OK.

More towards the strong ale category versus a strong or imperial brown as per the label. A little too sweet for my preference. Alcohol bite overpowers the nutty and malt flavors somewhat. These Flying Fish Exits are good beers, just not sure that they are quite worth the price tag.

A murky mahogany colored beer with a big frothy textured light tan head rising robustly above. There's good hang time on the head. Settles into a thick ringlet and low lying film. Chestnuts and molasses in the nose Add chocolate to the tasting. Full bodied and smooth.
