This style is orginally brewed as a "liquid bread" by fasting monks. A doppelbock is a rich, filling, strong lager. Our version is a warm reddish brown with an aroma of perserved fruit and dark toasted bread. This beer has six different malts and enough noble hops to balance, but leaves a malt-forward finish. Double Skull is both restrained and insistant. The carmel flavors are best sipped in cold weather, yet leaves a crisp lager finish. Not 7.7% this year. RB says8.5, BA says 9.0. I think our bottle was 9.2%, which ironically was the beers only real fault. Too heavy and a little too alcoholic, otherwise would be a very good liquid bread in a bottle. Rich and doughy. Loved the nose. A tiny bit lower on the taste. Oddly got cinnamon at room temp though I know there is none. Would not hesitate to buy this again.

22oz bottle, release #1. Pours light brown with a smallish frothy off white head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves a little lacing.
The aroma is grainy chocolate and toasted caramel malts with some acidic hops.
The flavor is sweet grainy chocolate and toffee malts with a little dark fruit and some hops that lead to a dry finish with some alcohol. As it warms, some leathery notes come out. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.
Overall, a kind of strange doppelbock. OK.
