The month of May, 1928 will for ever remain a landmark in Belgium's beer history. It was then that the Limburg brewery of Alken launched its Cristal lager. At the time many Belgian breweries were not yet able to produce low-fermentation beers and Cristal lager was hailed as a revolutionary new development. Consumers immediately took to Cristal. Its secret? A perfect combination of very soft spring water and carefully selected raw materials. The Alken brewery strongly promoted pure lager and in this way helped to develop the production of Belgian lager beers. The brand became Limburg’s major lager, but it is also much appreciated far beyond the Limburg borders. In 1989 the beer was awarded the Gold Medal (Monde Sélection) for quality in London. In 2003 Cristal will celebrate its 75th anniversary.

Very traditional. One of the cheapest beers in Belgium. Light yellow color, a little sour-sweet flavor, soft head. Pleasantly and easy drinkable, but no deeper impressions. Not really typical Belgian beer, rather Czech or German. In Belgian beer family this one is really "exclusive".
