First sold in 75 cl (25.4 fl.oz.) bottles, it is noted for its coppery colour which makes it particularly attractive. Topped with a creamy head, it gives off a light, fruity apricot aroma produced by the fermentation. The taste perceived in the mouth is a balance confirming the fruity nuances noticed in the fragrance. Its taste, which imparts a silky sensation to the tongue, is made refreshing by a light touch of bitterness. To the palate, the taster perceives a pleasant astringency which complements the flavour qualities of this beer very harmoniously. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised.

The Chimay Red has too much soda taste and is a bit too frothy for my taste but everything else is very good.

This is my favorite Chimay yet. Dark coppery colour pour with a head that retains and laces well. Fruity, yeast and floral aroma. Medium very smooth mouthfeel. Rich taste of caramel malt, fruit, yeast, a bit of spice and just a hint of bitterness.

Pours a fairly big foamy bubbly beige head and has a cloudy brownish appearance. Aromas of yeast, dry fruits, nutty malts. Flavours are also quite yeasty with strong notes of dried fruits (raisins, plums)as well as nutty malts. Has a nice warm sensation and a pretty much full bodied mouthfeel. Goes down very well. Prefer over the Chimay grand reserve (blue) but just a notch below the Cinq Cents (white)

Aroma is rich and fruity, mainly malty with strong apple or pear component and a hint of spice. It pours a dark, brownish amber that is somewhat cloudy and has a thick but not too persistent head. Flavor is rich and satisfying, mostly malty, strong fruity hint, and a touch of cinnamon or clove. Smooth and lip-smacking, it has a bit of an alcohol bite in the aftertaste. Strongly recommended.

Once again another Chimay I just didn't care for. Don't think I will be interesting in trying any more of there different beers. Everybody else drinking it were just nuts over it but I just didn't like the taste.

This is a constant favourite at the LCBO. A rich textured beer, as are all the Chimay's. This is my favourite of the three with dark malt and dark fruits dominating the aroma and flavour. It pairs well with their cheese as well.

Hazy darker brown color, foam does not stay - pitty. Fruity taste but still strong bitter aftertaste. Strong beer, taste stays long present. (Velp 201201)

Pours a brown amber color without much head retention The aroma is of strong alcohol smell with raisins, plums, and pear notes. It has a very strong malty flavor with some fruity notes. The mouthfeel is of a light beer with a medium level of carbonation.

The first corked bottle drink I have ever tried, before wine, even. This was sold in my local grocery store before American craft beers existed. At $13.00 for the bottle, I was extremely curious. At that time, in the early 90's, the bottle came with a Chimay brochure about the whole Trappist experience. I drank the bottle, regretted it, and didn't touch Chimay again until maybe 2008? After years of trying good craft brews, and finally learning to appreciate good Belgian ales, I am now a big fan of Chimay's Red. The best of their 3 major brews in my opinion! Highly recommend for any and all beer lovers. If you don't like this, you have to come back to this drink later in life. Highly, highly recommended!

A great dubble for sure but not the strongest beer in their stable. I like the uniqueness of the white and the granduer of the blue, this one is a bit too one dimensional compared to the other two. Classic belgian style with everything you are looking for, surely not a dissapointment.

Had a bottle at the Trappistenlokaal in Delft. You would expect that a bar this dedicated to beer and especially to trappist ales, would serve it a the right temperature. Too bad the bartender served it way to cold, so most of the aroma wasn't noticeable. Had to warm the glass up between my hands to bring it to temperature. Colour was ok, looking reddish brown with a hazy glow in it. When the aroma came back eventually, it had some forest fruits like berries, abricots and really fruity yeasts. It has a really subtle body, full and round, easy to drink. Flavour is full, sugar sweetness and small hints of chocolate. Nice one
