This year’s Pumpkin Ale is disguised as a French Farmhouse Ale for the season. Brewed with 240 pounds of organic pumpkin and eight different malts, this very dry beer displays a surprisingly full and silky mouth feel as a result of this very unique yeast. The interplay between yeast character and spices creates an interesting blend of flavor and aroma that is unlike other pumpkin ales. We add freshly grated ginger, ground cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and black pepper to the kettle along with a modest dose of Bravo and Saaz hops. The tradition of brewing with vegetables and spices is a very old one that has been done in Belgium and France for centuries, while the use of pumpkin as a brewing ingredient is a very American tradition dating back to the earliest settlements in New England.
