Like India Pale Ale, Imperial Stout was originally brewed with high levels of alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over the top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, wheat, rye, oats, and spelt. Approximately 10% of the batch was barrel-aged for four months, then blended with fresh beer before bottling. Za Vas!

Pours an opaque dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is sweet with heavy caramel and chocolate notes. Flavor is also sweet with a coffee undertones. Very slight alcohol burn at the end mingling with the hop. Nice bitter aftertaste. Another great beer from the Smokestack Series.

Poured out pitch black with a thick brown foamy head. The aroma is of espresso, roasted malt and bourbon. The taste is extremely good and thick. The taste is outstanding and complex.

Wish lister from John's Market in Portland. Last year's was 40% barrel-aged, not 10 (as in the description) but tasted like it was 100%. I was hoping for more nuances to come through this barreled blend, but it ended up being far more barrel heavy than expected. That said, it was damn good. Lucious and decadent, and got better as it warmed. All kinds of flavors battling for attention in there...rye, chocolate malt, booze, oak, anise. Good stuff.

A dark black color with a large tan head. The aroma contains some chocolate, espresso, and alcohol. The flavor is on the sweet side, very sweet side, with chocolate cake icing, cola, and espresso. I didnt pick up on the whiskey notes it states in the description. It sort of loses itself in this beer. Overall really good.

Pours a luscious opaque sable with a fairly thick and fluffy dirty tan head that sticks around for a little bit. Aroma has nice notes of quality coffee, roast malt, chocolate, a snippet of whisky-soaked wood, and even a touch of hops. Flavor is bold as a watchdog, rolling chocolate, caramel, coffee and whisky notes plus a whisper of woody hops. Texture is fir m and smooth, it not overly fizzy. Fit for a Czar, or a Czarina.

2013 bottle.Pours jet black with a full two finger deep beige head atop that settles very slowly into a frothy mass.Aromas of dark fruit stand out most with lighter whiskey barrel notes.A smooth creamy fuller feel makes for a good sipping brew.Alot of dark fruit on the palate along with dark molasses and chocolate, there is a noticeable earthiness in the finish which was nice. Plus the barrel aging doesn't overpower the beer, but compliments it quite well. Overall its a fine Imp. Stout.

750ml bottle, dated 2011 - # 13032; batch 2011-2, best by 01/2013. Pours a dark black-brown with a large nitro like creamy brown head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is dark fruits and some black licorice, vinous alcohol and wood and some brett.

The flavor is sweet molasses, chocolate, dark fruit and vinous alcohol with some black licorice and roasted bitterness at the finish. The mouthfeel is is pretty full bodied and creamy.

Overall, it's a little young with the sweetness, vinous alcohol and bitter roast not blending really well yet. It could be very nice with a bit of age.

HUUUGE Thanks to my buddy Andy for hooking me up with this amazing ImpStout. My last brew fro him and I commeratively cracked this sonofabiotch open after the Badger win agains Northwestern on Saturday. It's...beeee...ginning to smell alot like Roses! Pitch Black, think, muddy and delicate. Such elegance in a glass. Aroma is so incredible. HEavily roasted coffee beans. Toast, earth, tree roots punctuated by dark mayan chocolate dirt artifact- whatever you can say about it, it was huge and earthy. I was so sad once this beer was gone from my glass, and, could say slightly selfish. Taking pulls off my wife's when she wasn't looking. Boozey- not so much. but a little sniff can bring you into a whiskey dream...............

Pours dense black with a slight head, but appears no different really than many other imperials. Sweet with caramel and chocolate - flavor is number one with this one.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a huge brown foamy head with great retention and perfect lacing. Aroma of dry roasted barley malt with some coffee notes and some sweet lingering notes with some bourbon notes as well. Taste is a complex mix between some roasted malt notes with light bitterness that is offset by lingering sweetness and some coffee notes with a slightly overwhelming bourbon finish. Body is quite full with some creamy notes and some perfect carbonation with slightly apparent alcohol notes. I am not sure what to make of this one – complex and somewhat balanced though a lot more bourbon then I would have liked.

Dark deep brown, great foam .. . light bourbon, wood, and molasses .. . pretty good but weak finish .. .

    You know, a lot's changed since 1967.

No doubt, love, but as long as people are still having promiscuous sex with many anonymous partners without protection while at the same time experimenting with mind-expanding drugs in a consequence-free environment, I'll be sound as a pound!
