Part of #febrewary 2016! Tyrannosaurus Gruit is a red gruit ale made with beets and hibiscus flowers. Organic juniper berries and spruce tips and add in an enjoyable element of woodsiness and conifer resins. History & Style Gruits take inspiration from centuries-old brewing tradition; a time before the Bavarian Purity Act of 1516 that declared that all beer be made solely with barley, hops, and water. In gruit ale, herbs, spices and other botanicals replace a dominant hop character, throwing open the door to experimentation with flavour and beer terroir. Tasting Notes Tyrannosaurus Gruit pours brilliantly clear with a red cranberry colour. Aromas of beets and berries give way to subtle spruce. The flavour reflects beet flavour with resinous, peppery spruce notes. A hint of juniper follows. The finish is bright and crisp. Food Pairings Beet salad with lentils; beet-leaf-wrapped chèvre; oatmeal crepes with vanilla & wildflower-honey-scented ricotta & rosehip syrup; beet-cured wild salmon gravlax; old clothbound cheddar. Technical Specs * ALC/VOL: 5.8% * INGREDIENTS: Local spring water, organic barley malts, organic beet powder, organic spruce tips, organic juniper berries, organic hops, organic hibiscus flowers, brewer’s yeast. * MALTS: Pale ale, Vienna, CaraRed, acidulated (all organic) * HOPS: Organic magnum * YEAST: German ale * IBU’S: 17 * OG: 13 * FG: 2.5 * GLASSWARE: Toscana

On tap at Arrow and Loon. Pours no head whatsoever and has a reddish amber appearance with ruby hues. Weak lacing. Aromas of cranberries, spices and sweet malts. Flavours are actually quite mixed and overwhelming at first. Lots of cranberry notes and some hints of beets. Actually quite sweet.

Enjoyed at the Arrow & Loon for "Febrewary" 2016. Pours a clear light-ruby red colour with a small pinkish head, not much retention, nor lacing. Cranberry aromas with earthy notes. Eventually hints of honey. The is mostly beets with earthy notes again. The finish is short. Refreshing beet brew that is interesting, but not something I would have again.
